Heavymetal is an evolutionary product of pop, blues and "classical" music with a generally accepted life cycle of 20 years, from approximately 1970 to 1990.
Heavymetal is mainly blues-based, with pentatonic scales and a blues-like song structure; fl metal is based on classical music, even if at a first glance it seems to be only distortedguitars playing very fast a repeating melody.
Ultimately, "pure" heavymetal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at center, and metal denizens will contend that the move towards the center was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.

Heavymetal has a relationship with spiritual issues in both symbol and music theory, as heavymetal chords and harmonies emphasize the use of open fifths—drawing ironic parallels to harmony changes in Christian Sacred Harp singing.
Heavymetal's comeback was solidified with the arrival of Ozzfest in 1996, a touring music festival hosted by Ozzy Osbourne, the former lead singer of Black Sabbath.

Heavymetal, as the music most visibly fascinated with death and suffering (and most likely to mention Nietzsche), addresses the sublimated issue of Nietzsche's abyss in Western society, which has based its founding principles and individual social and mystical values upon the polarity of "good" and "evil," is an identification with the enemy.
Metal's belief system is closer to this than to any modern equivalent, thus it is sensible to posit a closure of the cycle and its renewal in the ideas gestured by heavymetalmusic.

For a brief spell during the mid-'80s, the heavymetal quintet Dio was one of the top U.S. concert attractions, boasting one of the most over-the-top stage acts of its time loaded with props and special effects (lasers, explosions, a giant dragon, etc.).
Ronnie James Dio honed his metal chops singing lead in both Rainbow and Black Sabbath, and his own band is sort of a reflection of both: the sinister, medievally gothic elegance of the former, and the crushingly heavy, doom-laden riffs of the latter.

So the fact the SOUNDTRACK is called HEAVYMETAL does not necessarily mean it is obligated to saturate it with the same kind of heavy tracks as the count-them-on-one-hand cuts that actually WERE featured, such as Sammy Hagar's "HEAVYMETAL" and Black Sabbath's "THE MOB RULES".

Gothmetal is a label that gets applied to a number of bands these days, and I tend to like a lot of this stuff too.
