Herpetology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Herpetology (Greek herpeton = to creep, to ramp and logos = word) is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of reptiles and amphibians.
Herpetology deals with what are called the cold-blooded tetrapods, that is, those land vertebrates which are ectothermic (deriving their body temperature from their environment) rather than endothermic (deriving their body heat from an independent, internal source).
Typically, amphibians have a permeable skin that assists in the exchange of gases and respiration, have a two-chambered heart like fish, and are often bound to water for at least some part of their life, if only the laying of eggs or birth of young.

Careers in Herpetology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
That is an admirable choice, but you should have a strong desire to study reptiles and amphibians for the road to a career in herpetology is not an easy one -- but it is an interesting one.
Years ago it was possible for individuals to study amphibians and reptiles on their own, perhaps by maintaining large collections of animals or by studying them in the wild, and learn enough to get a position at a zoo or museum as a herpetologist.
But if you are seriously interested in pursuing herpetology as a career you might want to attend a college that also offers a course in herpetology (or at least in natural history or vertebrate zoology) and has one or more faculty members conducting herpetological research.

This distinction applies to most (though not quite all) living tetrapods, but may break down somewhat in regard to extinct reptilian creatures such as dinosaurs, about whose body metabolism we know frustratingly little.
The two classes dealt with in herpetology, reptiles and amphibians, share "cold-bloodedness" but otherwise have surprisingly little else in common.
Herpetology branches off into taxonomically-oriented disciplines such as ophiology (study of snakes).

Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles
The Journal of Herpetology accepts manuscripts on the biology of amphibians and reptiles, with emphasis on behavior, biochemistry, conservation, ecology, evolution, morphology, physiology, and systematics.
Papers on captive breeding, new techniques or sampling methods, limited natural history observations (i.e., isolated behavioral or morphological descriptions that are not placed in a broader ecological or comparative context), geographic range extensions, and essays are generally not suitable.
Voucher Specimens The Journal of Herpetology requires that all submissions from researchers reporting results of phylogenetic reconstruction and taxonomic decision be supplemented by in-text (if a shorter communication) or appendix (if a major paper) reference to voucher specimens.

Applied Herpetology is an international journal addressing research on amphibians and reptiles in relation to humans and therefore focussing on natural products development, farming, ethnobiology, biodiversity and environmental monitoring, conservation and wildlife management.

Initially proposed at the 3rd World Congress of Herpetology (Prague, August 1997), applied herpetology was formally defined at a workshop of the 4th World Congress (Sri Lanka, December 2001) as those studies in herpetology that concern human interests (uses of amphibians and reptiles), or result from human interference.
