Hungerford is located on the River Dun in the Kennet Valley at grid reference SU337685.
Hungerford is situated on several transport routes, of both historic and current importance, including the M4 motorway (junction 14), the Old Bath Road (A4), and the Kennet and Avon Canal (opened 1811).
Hungerford is part of the district administered by the unitary authority of West Berkshire.

The first shooting occurred seven miles (11.2 km) to the west of Hungerford in Savernake Forest in Wiltshire, at 12:30 in the afternoon of August 19.

Between the 11th and 14th centuries the manor of Hungerford passed between the Crown and various Duchies of Leicester and Lancaster, and in 1362 it passed to John of Gaunt, a name that is strongly associated with the town today.
Hungerford's most important day is Tutti-Day (the second Tuesday after Easter), which marks the end of the financial and administrative year.
The railway came to Hungerford in 1847, and the line was later extended onwards to the west, but the expected prosperity failed to materialise, and the population actually fell between 1851 and 1901.

Hungerford was knighted later in the year and his election for Wiltshire to the 3rd Parliament of the reign marked his rehabilitation there.
In 1568 Hungerford sued his wife for divorce, alleging that she attempts to poison him in 1564 and had committed adultery between 1560 and 1568 with William Darrell of Littlecote and that she had had a child by him.
Hungerford spent three years in the fleet prison, refusing to support his wife in separation or to pay the 250 pounds awarded her as costs in the suit, though willing, he afterwards asserted, to take her back.
