Straight engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A straight engine is considerably easier to build than an otherwise equivalent horizontally opposed or V engine because the cylinder bank can be milled from a single metal casting and it requires fewer cylinder heads and camshafts.
Inline engines are also much smaller in volume than designs like the radial, and can be mounted in any direction.
This differs from a flat engine because it is essentially an inline engine laid on its side.

Marine Diesel Engine, Marine Diesel, Diesel Marine Motor, Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine, Volvo Penta Marine Diesel Engine
Engines classified as “inline” are configured such that the cylinders are inline on a single bank and therefore typically utilize a longer crankshaft versus that of the “V” engine.
Inline 6 cylinder engines typically offer smooth power delivery, however this is not case with the 4 cylinder counterparts as they are inherantly out of 1st order balance.
Inline engines that do match the displacement of a “V” engine will be much heavier due to the stroke, size and length of the required crankshaft.

 AutoZine Technical School - Engine
Firstly, it bridges the gap between 4 and 6-cylinder engines, thus may offer the best cylinder capacity for optimized efficiency; Secondly, compare with 4-cylinder engines, it saves one balancer shaft; Thirdly, compare with 6-cylinder engines, it is short enough to be fitted transversely into the engine compartment of front-wheel-drive cars, driving directly the inline gearbox.
However, it generates end-to-end vibration like 3-cylinder engines, because piston 1 is not in the same position as piston 5, and piston 2 is not in the same position as piston 4.
Obviously, the solution is the same as 3-pot engines, that is, employ a balancer shaft on which there are counter weights moving in the opposite direction to the pistons.

South Jersey Skybolt :: A Radial Engined Biplane :: Radial Engine
The radial differs from an inline combustion engine by having the cylinders arranged around a common crankshaft pointing out like spokes on a wheel.
The advantages to using a radial engine on an aircraft are numerous.
Inline engines require complicated baffles to route the cooling air around and to the back cylinders.

Howstuffworks "Is there a difference between inline and V engine configurations?"
Inline -- the cylinders are arranged in a line in a single bank:
In an air-cooled engine, the inline configuration is sometimes harder to cool.
A V engine is a compromise between the two.

 Inline-4 - Wikicars
The inline-4 or straight-4 is an internal combustion engine with four cylinders aligned in one row.
Larger engines (up to 4.5 L) have been seen in racing and light truck use, especially using diesel fuel (an example is the Mercedes-Benz MBE 904).
This engine was originally designed as a 2 litre Formula 2 engine for the Ferrari 500 but evolved to 2.5L to compete in Formula One in the Ferrari 625.

The engines’ exhaust cam phaser is a common feature to the Vortec inline engine family used to enable variable valve timing (VVT).
The Vortec inline engine family also provides a strong foundation from which to add other potential technologies, such as full variable valve timing (for both intake and exhaust), turbocharging, direct injection-gasoline or potentially larger displacements.

Regardless of the type of fuel that is burned, nearly all engines operate in a similar fashion and share common terms when describing their specifications.
The displacement of an engine, or its size, is the volume of air the engine can move during one engine cycle.
Engines of modern design have three, four, or five valves per cylinder that allow the engine to move air more efficiently to increase power and conserve fuel.

Once the engine is out (a process made much easier by removing the sheet metal from the firewall forward), remove the motor mount plate from the block.
The Stovebolt Engine Company motor mount kit is also of value when installing a Stovebolt automatic transmission adapter behind a 235-261 because it shortens the spread to the tail shaft of the transmission.

Gasoline engines lose efficiency at partial load due to pumping losses, friction, etc. (I believe one of the tricks Honda does with VTEC is to reduce pumping losses by keeping exhaust valves open longer at partial load).

The 3.7L engine is the only engine offered on the '07 HUMMER H3 and H3 X. GM's inline engines meet the diverse demands of midsize pickup and SUV customers.
Both new engines are based on GM's modular inline engine design, which also serves as the foundation for the award-winning 4.2L I-6 in the Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7X.
The inline engines share much of their design and technology, including dual-overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing (VVT), sequential fuel injection and a coil-on-plug ignition system.

As a result, the inline six-cylinder engine is installed transversely in the engine compartment, which contributes to impressive impact safety.
Volvo’s engines are fitted transversely and a compact engine thus has more space to move inside the engine compartment in the event of an impact that deforms the car’s front.
The compact dimensions of the transversely mounted, inline six-cylinder engine are ensured by locating the ancillaries, such as the power-assisted steering pump and air conditioning compressor behind the engine in the space above the gearbox.

The Vortec 4200 represents other firsts for GM: first all-aluminum engine for light trucks (until now, all GM light truck engines have been constructed with iron blocks), and it is the first GM engine of any kind to use variable valve timing.
Engineers also are proud of the engine's carefully optimized combustion: The Vortec 4200 runs an advantageous 10:1 compression ratio, yet doesn't require premium gasoline.
He adds that the new Vortec engine enjoys around 5% better fuel economy and a 25% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions when compared to the 4.3L OHV V-6 engine used in GM's current midsize SUVs.

So taking their idea one step further, why not develop an inline four that is capable of firing 2 cylinders at a time in the lower revs to improve torque/hp, and move to a inline four configuration as the revs climb, where the inline configuration works better than the twin.
An engine that fires two cylinders at once (4 cyl), does in fact have better traction, because of less pulses.
While a 4-cylinder, 4-stroke engine normally has two cylinders at TDC simultaneously, one of them is on the compression stroke and one is on the exhaust stroke, put another way, one of them has no valves open and the other has an exhaust valve open.

This experiment was conducted for two reasons; most Army fighters of the period were powered by inline engines (P-40, P-39 and P-5 I s) and there existed a possibility that there could be a shortage of Pratt and Whitney Wasp engines since the demand for these engines was exceeding their output.
The installation of the inline engine gave the XAT-6E a much longer nose section and led to a compete rebalancing of the aircraft.
