Whereas inflection tables for all forms of the regular verbs (reguläre Verben) are shown in Konjugationsregeln, it is the objectiv of this Section to discuss the rules and patterns of those basic inflection forms from which all others are formed by simple rules.
Whereas the verb endings are inflected almost identically as those in the regular verbs, it is the word stem, as well, that gets to be modified in the irregular verbs.
Verbs whose word stem differs in Konjunktiv II (see Class 4) are underlined, and should be used in würde form instead of the Konjunktiv II Präterit.

  The Irregular Verbs
What these suddenly-regular verbs have in common  is  that  they are  based  on  nouns:  to  hit  a fly that gets caught, to clobber with a high stick, to play to the grandstand, to form a ring around.
As some of the verbs became less common, like  cleave-clove,  abide-abode,  and geld-gelt,  children  failed  to memorize their irregular forms and applied the -ed rule instead (just as today children are apt to say  winded  and  speaked).
The  irregular  forms  were  doomed  for  these children's children and for all subsequent generations (though some of the dead irregulars have left  souvenirs among the English adjectives, like cloven, cleft, shod, gilt, and pent).

The highly irregular copular verb to be has eight forms: be, am, is, are, being, was, were, been, of which only one is derivable from a principal part (being is derived from be).
The verb will, although historically not a preterite-present verb, has come to be inflected like one when used as an auxiliary; it adds -s in the third person singular only when it is a full verb: Whatever she wills to happen will make life annoying for everyone else.

 Verbs and Verbals
Verbs that are intransitive do not require objects: "The building collapsed." In English, you cannot tell the difference between a transitive and intransitive verb by its form; you have to see how the verb is functioning within the sentence.
Verbs can be combined with different prepositions and other words, sometimes with dizzying effect: stand out, stand up, stand in, stand off, stand by, stand fast, stand pat, stand down, stand against, stand for.
These verb tenses don't have to be identical as long as they reflect, logically, shifts in time and meaning: "My brother had graduated before I started college." "My brother will have graduated before I start." Click HERE for a chart describing various time relationships and how those relationships determine the appropriate sequence of verb tenses.

Irregular verbs, on the other hand, can end in a variety of ways, with absolutely no consistent pattern.
When you choose an irregular verb for a sentence, however, the simple past and past participle are often different, so you must know the distinction.

An analysis of irregular verb usage in Lumbee English
Hatch observed that younger speakers use these irregular verb forms less often than older speakers, showing change in the dialect and presaging loss of the dialect as time goes by.
Hatch notes as limitations of her study the small sample size (23 participants) and the fact that the interviewees aged 16-23 were in school at the time of the interviews, so their tapes were 30-40 minutes shorter than tapes of the other age groups.
Hatch summarizes the significance of her study: “It provides a reference list of Lumbee English irregular verbs which is an avenue in distinguishing developmental errors that are the result of natural cognitive and physical maturation, from dialectal differences, which are culturally correct and acceptable, from disorders that can be targeted for treatment” (p.

Ancient Greek verb stems and principal parts
If you have a list of principal parts for an irregular verb, how do you use that to work out what the stem is? This simple question does not seem to be addressed directly in the grammars.
The data in this chart is essential, once you start to deal with irregular verbs, where you are using something other than the present stem.
The second aorist passive is in theory found by prefixing an epsilon to the 'verb-stem' (a basically useless concept, as far as I can see, except for regular verbs which, of course, do not have second aorist passives) but since the vowel in the stem also changes in various ways, it's basically irregular.
