Famed contralto Marian Anderson made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on January 7, 1955, as Ulrica in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera.
In January 1939, a writer employed by the Folklore Project of the Federal Writers' Project mentioned Anderson to Katy Brumby, an African-American woman she was interviewing in Birmingham, Alabama.

To those who have heard these shows in their entirety, with all of those nasty tape reel cuts, worry not: when the time comes to release these shows on CD, there are also good-sounding cassettes of these shows with which to fix these cuts.
Lastly, also from the same March, 1982 rehearsal, is this version of Crazy Fingers, and although not perfect, it was the band’s first attempt at the song in almost six years, a song they wouldn’t break out until the summer of 1982.

 WTC Environmental Monitoring: January 5-7, 2002
This brings the total number of air samples collected and analyzed for lower Manhattan to 4,319, with 30 samples above the standard (27 of these were collected prior to September 30, the other three were collected on October 9, November 27 and December 27).
VOCs - Sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was conducted on January 4, 5 and 6 in the direct area of the debris pile at ground zero.
Low levels of carbon monoxide were also found on January 6.

 A case of extremely Rapid Cyclogenesis in the North Atlantic (7-8 January 2005)
During the 3-day period from 6 to 8 January 2005 parts of Northwest Scotland and Northern Wales received well over 100 mm of precipitation, with an observatory on the mountain called Capel Curig (in Snowdonia) reporting 225 mm of rain (see report on severe storm from D. Jameson, PDF, 9 KB).
At 22:00 UTC on 7 January 2005, the WV6.2 image clearly shows a dark stripe between the baroclinic leaf (or cloud head) and the cloudiness from the warm conveyer belt.
This dark stripe, or dry instrusion, is caused by the advection of dry sinking air originating from the lower levels of the stratosphere along the cyclonic side of the jet stream (see WV6.2 image, GIF, 277 KB).

 US Team Summer Deaflympics: January 7, 2005
Lindy Decker of York, Pennsylvania competed in the first squad and comfortably stayed at the top by 57 pins (190, 214, 183, 209, 210, and 179).
Sharon Rutherford climbed steadily up to 4th place with other two fellow U.S. teammates, Cheyenne Rogers and Debbie White, tied behind her by 7 pins.
Coach Carol Moers is proud of what her team has accomplished so far, especially Decker since it is her first experience in the Deaflympic Games, and has announced that Decker and Rogers will bowl together for women’s doubles on January 9th.

On January 19, representatives of the leadership of the Iraq Governing Council will meet with Secretary General Kofi Annan for consultations at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Council will decide with regard to the UN peacekeeping missions which will end their mandate during January: the missions in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Georgia (UNOMIG), and Liberia (UNIFIL).
The Security Council reunions scheduled for January will also include debates on issues of global interest, such as maintaining international peace and security, small-caliber weapons, children in armed conflicts and national reconciliation in post-conflict situations.

With effect from 7 January 2008, the one item restriction will no longer apply at certain airports.  Click here for more details. The maximum size for items of hand luggage is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm per bag.
However, airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin.
This means that at these airports the restriction previously imposed limiting hand baggage to one item per person will no longer apply with effect from 7 January 2008.
