John Sevier, who was still highly regarded in Virginia was called back to his state and he served as a Captain in the Virginia lines of what became known as "Lord Dunmore’s War"– named after the then- Royal Governor of Virginia.
Sevier served as the Watauga representative in the North Carolina legislature and was later appointed district judge of Watauga.
John Sevier was made a brigadier-general of forces in the territory and went on to become the first Congressman elected to office from the territory.

In the American Revolution, Sevier, a supporter of independence and a veteran of many campaigns against Native Americans, was prominent as one of the frontier leaders in the American victory at Kings Mountain (1780) in the Carolina campaign.
In 1791 he was made a brigadier general in the "Territory South of the River Ohio" and in 1794 was appointed to its 10-man legislative council.
The new state of Tennessee was organized (1796) out of this territory, and Sevier, elected the first governor, served from 1796 to 1801 and again from 1803 to 1809.

This grant was enlarged in 1665 both as to territory and jurisdiction, and in 1669 the lords proprietors promulgated the "Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina", framed by John Locke, the philosopher, but they proved too theoretical for practical operation.
