A Kachina has three aspects: the supernatural being, as he exists in the minds of the Hopis; the maksed impersonator of the supernatural being, who appears in rhe kivas and plazas; and the small dolls carved in the same likeness.
Kachinas are hard to classify, many reasons include limited ideas to their appearance and function but also because the ideas differ from mesa to mesa, clan to clan, etc. We can recognize a number of classes of kachinas however.
There are large numbers of kachinas that appear singly or in pairs in the kachina parade at the Bean Ceremonies, and also in the mixed kachina dances in Spring and eary summer.

Kachinas (or katsinas) are actually stylized religious icons, meticulously carved from cottonwood root and painted to represent figures from Hopi mythology.
When you see Navajo kachinas or Mexican kachinas, those are imitations of the real Hopi kachinas, just as much so as kachinas made by white people or imported from Korea are.
