Kamba (Kakamba) is of the Niger-Congo family of languages spoken by a total of about 2,500,000 in Kenya.

Kamba colonial history - Traditional Music & Cultures of Kenya
The section on the Kamba and the British Army was adapted from Professor Tim Parson's essay in Ethnohistory 46.4 entitled "Wakamba Warriors Are Soldiers of the Queen: The Evolution of the Kamba as a Martial Race, 1890—1970" (The American Society for Ethnohistory, 1999).
Unsurprisingly, both the Kikuyu and the Kamba flatly opposed what appeared to them to be an unwarranted invasion of their territory, and in 1896 and 1897 small military expeditions were sent against them by the British, in the same way that ruthless "patrols" were used against the Giriama, Taita, Kisii, Nandi and Elgeyo.
The Kamba economy declined, however, with a huge loss of cattle to rinderpest in the 1880s, the arrival of the Europeans, and the subsequent ban on further expansion.

Kamba introduction - Traditional Music & Cultures of Kenya
The Bantu-speaking Kamba are numerically Kenya's fourth-largest people, and live in the largely semi-arid hills of Ukambani north of the Nairobi-Mombasa road, between Nairobi and Mount Kenya and eastwards towards the Tsavo East National Park near the coast.
They came originally from the region of Mount Kilimanjaro in the south, and are known in Kenya both for their skill at wood carving, and for the way in which they have successfully eked out an agricultural living from the marginal lands on which they live.
Their proximity to the coast, and the need to trade (especially in times of drought), meant that the Kamba were also traders, and became deeply involved in the Zanzibar-dominated ivory and slave trade.

Part II Africa for Africans: Ethiopian Independent Churches
If a Kamba Christian was known to have "sinned," and he or she attempted to pray in church, the congregation would shout him/her down.
If a person confessed their sin, or was accused of sin by other church members, they had to sit in the fl chair during church services and other church functions for as long as the missionaries dictated.
Missionaries represented the colonial government on a microcosmic level; the struggle for African leadership within churches was a miniature reflection of the struggle for African political leadership within the nation.
