The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, but have been the subject of a claim to sovereignty by Argentina since the early years of Argentina's independence.
Argentina has continued to claim sovereignty over the islands, and the dispute was used by the military junta dictatorship as an excuse to invade and briefly occupy the islands before being defeated in the two-month-long undeclared Falklands War in 1982 by a United Kingdom task force which returned the islands to British control.
It is thought this canid was brought to the island by humans, although it may have reached the islands by itself via a land bridge during the last ice age.

This island might be one of the most important in Antarctic history: this is where 22 members of Shackleton's "Endurance" expedition were stranded in 1915 after their ship was crushed in Weddell Sea pack ice - they spent 135 days on the island.
This island is the largest of the South Shetlands, and is often called Antarctica's unofficial capital, due to the eight national winter stations built on it.
Deception Island is easily recognised on any map, because of its broken-ring shape, and its collapsed volcanic cone provides one of the safest natural harbours in the world.

Named for the reigning British monarch, HMS King George V was the first of a five-ship class that was criticized because it was weaker than the most powerful German battleships then afloat or building.
In late May she was involved in the pursuit of Bismarck, and on the morning of the 27th, she and Rodney poured endless rounds into the doomed battleship.
