Lene Lovich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lovich was born in Detroit, Michigan, but after her father became mentally unstable her mother took her and her three siblings to live in Hull, England.
Lovich met the guitarist/songwriter Les Chappell, who became her longtime collaborator, when they were teeangers.
It was there that Lovich first tied her hair into the plaits that later became a visual trademark, though at first she did it to keep her hair out of the clay when studying sculpture.

Lene Lovich (pronounced Lay-na Luv-itch) -- she of the high-pitched, shrieky voice, spooky wide-eyed stare and general oddball appearance -- was born in Detroit in 1949 to a Yugoslav father and an English mother.
Lene ended up enrolling at the Central Scool of Art where she studied sculpture, and even went on a successful pilgramage to Spain to meet artist Salvador Dali.
In fact, Nina included a German-language version of Lovich's hit "Lucky Number" (Wir Leben Immer Noch) on her album Unbehagan; and in 1986 the two of them sang together in on "Don't Kill the Animals", an animal-rights song that has since appeared on various compilations.

 The Devious Planet
Since Lene Lovich burst onto the scene with her 1979 hit single "Lucky Number," ushering in the new wave era, her life has been defined by an unyielding commitment to the arts and activism.
Lene has carved out a unique niche in the world, always while doggedly pursuing her own muse, her own passions.
In addition to her musical and theatrical activities, and raising two daughters, Lene is also a leading advocate for animal rights, often on behalf of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

For three year's she was one of Stiff's brightest stars but as new wave declined in the mid eighties so did Lene Lovich.

in 1979 Lene embarked on her first headlining tour and also released Lucky Number, which hit number 10 on the charts In 1979, her appearance in the film Cha Cha captured the impact of new wave on the Amsterdam underground scene.
Cha Cha was followed in by the release of Lene's second album Flex, recorded in Holland and featuring Lene's permanent backing band (who, incidentally, were as offbeat-looking as Lene!): Flex shot straight up into the English charts and was followed by a grand tour of the United States and Europe.
Since the 80's Lene and Les Chappell (partner, guitar player and co-songwriter) have recorded 3 additional albums are are still taking the opportunity to refine their vision.

 TrouserPress.com :: Lene Lovich
Lene Lovich helped pave the way for female vocalists to use as many vocal eccentricities as their male counterparts, to be unafraid to play a solo instrument (Lovich's is sax), and — as important as anything else — to feel free to adopt and project personae that are obviously feminine yet not socially stereotyped.
During her erratic and sporadic career, the Detroit native has made a batch of good tracks, but has yet to deliver an entire satisfying LP.
Lacking it, No-Man's-Land is another half-good LP, with Lovich's appropriation of "It's You, Only You" (from Holland's Meteors) again demonstrating her ability to bring out melody and create her own airy, eerie atmosphere.

Certainly daring of me to write a blog about Lene Lovich – I have never been much of a fan, beyond thinking some of her singles were pretty good.
Also, I was all of 20 years old when Lene Lovich walked across the lawn – I was probably more interested in Kate Bush or Annette Peacock than I was of the ‘sexless’ Lovich.
I deeply regret not going to Atlanta the week after I was there for another concert to see Lene just because I thought [at the time] that it would be decadent to drive 400 miles 2 weeks in a row for 2 concerts.

The Detroit-born, Britain-bred Lene Lovich rode high on the crest of new wave in the early '80s, scoring the hit "Lucky Number," and releasing three albums on Stiff Records.
After her initial run, Lovich largely disappeared, reemerging briefly for a Nina Hagen duet in 1986 and an album four years later.
Now in her mid-50s, Lovich is back with her first solo album in 15 years.

One of Stiff Records' most stable staples, the truly alternative Lene Lovich laid much of the groundwork for an entire generation of singers left to pick up the pieces in the wasteland of the post-punk era.
Elsewhere, the darkly sinister "Home" played off the rumors concerning Lovich's exotic Eastern European background (she was actually from Detroit, but she could fake a great accent).
While Stateless...Plus is certainly very much of its era, and well-placed in its time, inspired and adventurous songwriting coupled with a truly pioneering intent ensure that this LP will always remain the lit roadside marker that whispered "this way" to the hundreds of bands who followed.

Well yes, thanks to Lene Lovich, who stole the show most nights and followed up with a UK tour of her own early the following year.
An ardent believer in reincarnation, Lene has been able to watch herself reappear in an endless succession of other artists, from Hazel O'Connor and Toni Basil to Cyndi Lauper and most recently Gwen Stefani, who has mimicked both Lene's voice and her kooky hairdo.
Lene wrote the lyric of 'Supernature' for Cerrone, and provided blood curdling screams for horror movies.

Lene Lovich's career with Stiff Records began on a high and went progressively downhill from there -- by the time of her third album for the label, even devoted fans were regretting that the early promise was never fulfilled.
Still they remained loyal, however, and though two discs compiling Lovich's entire label output might be half-a-disc too many, the first volume in the set has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
Of course there were highlights across that album and, thankfully, the bulk of them were on side one -- the swooping, shrieking nervousness of "Bird Song" remains as exhilarating today as it ever was back then..

Most songs are written by Lovich and Les Chappel, including the quirky Lucky Number, which was a huge hit (Nina Hagen covered it in German on her Unbehagen album).
Not all are bright, happy numbers: Home, Too Tender (To Touch) and Momentary Breakdown are sad but beautiful torch songs, and there's a great version of Nick Lowe's Tonight and the old standard I Think we're Alone Now.
