Still unsure of the enemy's position, Ali Pasha ordered his fleet to drop anchor for the night in a sheltered bay fifteen miles from the entrance to the inlet, where it remained all the next day anxiously awaiting the return of the scouting vessels.
With the first light of dawn the following morning, October 7, 1571, lookouts stationed high on a peak guarding the northern shore of the gulf's entrance signaled to Kara Kosh that the enemy was heading south along the coast and would soon round the headland into the gulf itself.

 Tactics of Lepanto
When tactics are mentioned at all, Lepanto comes across in Anglo-American naval historiography as a nautical Donnybrook Fair, a mindless slugfest where the only thought of the opposing commanders was to come to grips as quickly as possible, eliminating all nautical subtleties to engage in a "land battle at sea," whatever that means.
The reasons for this are pivotal: Lepanto's outcome hinged on differences in the design and tactical capabilities of the warships engaged and on the way in which the opposing commanders used them.
In a technical sense, Lepanto may have been a meeting engagement—there is no evidence that either commander deliberately selected the location of the battle—but in fact, Lepanto was fought remarkably close to plan on both sides.

That Lepanto was the high water mark of Spanish naval accomplishment is all the more remarkable in that it preceded by only a few years the debacle of the Invincible Armada.
Having moved its fleet--the largest in the world--to the forward base at Lepanto, the Turks were in a position to achieve their goal of taking possession of Italy (just across the Adriatic from Lepanto and largely divided between Spanish holdings and the Papal states) and dominating the Western Mediterranean as they did the East.
For her, Lepanto was not so much a victory for Spain or the Pope as a triumph for all Christendom - a guarantee that the values upon which Western Europe had been established would survive.

It was the year 1571 when that fleet was gathered near a port in Greece, not far from the Gulf of Lepanto.
For decades now, the Turks had used their near-supremacy in the Mediterranean to make constant raids on the Christian communities near the sea, and hauled away young women and men for the harems, and stronger men for the galleys.
Indeed, many of the galley slaves pulling the oars of the Turkish fleet sailing proudly and confidently into the Gulf of Lepanto were Christians captured in these and other ways.
