San Diego Zoo's Animal Bytes: Mangabey
White-eyelid mangabeys are most closely related to mandrills and drills, and the males are much larger than the females; crested mangabeys are more closely related to baboons and geladas and both males and females are about the same size.
All mangabeys have tails that are longer than their bodies, providing balance for them as they scamper through the rain forest canopy.
However, white-eyelid mangabeys are also comfortable on the ground, traveling on their hands and feet between patches of forest or to forage in the leaf litter for tasty food items.

From field observations and detailed photography, the scientists have concluded that the highland mangabey is a little under 3-feet (1-meter) long--6.5 feet (2-meters) including tail--has long, brown fur, an off-white chest and tail, and fl skin.
The highland mangabey's arboreal nature and uniformly fl face and eyelids are characteristic of one of two mangabey genera, Lophocebus, which is most closely related to baboons.
This mangabey is one of three threatened monkey species that researchers have identified in the Udzungwas, a testament to the biologically rich but fragile ecosystems of the region.

The Grey-cheeked Mangabey lives in a variety of habitats with the forests of Central Africa, it is generally thought to live in either swamp or primary forests, in some areas it has also been found in secondary forest as well.
Some authors in the past have considered the species to be restricted to the forest canopy, however more recently habituated troops have been observed on the forest floor collecting food.

 Yerkes Mangabey Permit Application Withdrawn
However, this surprise withdrawal comes in the wake of a sudden USFWS decision to consider downlisting the sooty mangabey from “endangered” to a category of animals that are less at risk.
On 24 July 2006, Amy Brisendine of the USFWS contacted Jim Else of the Yerkes Primate Center, requesting additional documentation about the Yerkes mangabey colony and how it was managed; she also asked for details of exactly how the Ivory Coast field project would benefit the sooty mangabey species.
Mangabeys are natural carriers of a form of the AIDS virus, but they do not get sick from it; however, three of the six infected mangabeys had undergone invasive surgery to remove their thymus glands prior to being exposed to the virus.

 Julie Wieczkowski's research information
It is considered critically endangered because of a limited geographic distribution, a small population size (thought to be near 1,200 animals in 1994), and severe threats to its habitat.
By studying the behavior, diet, and ranging of the mangabey across both space and time, many questions can be answered about the behavioral and ecological flexibility of the mangabey.
Mangabeys in the Cercocebus genus are known to have the dental anatomy to subsist on tough nuts and seeds (Fleagle and McGraw, 2002); we are now just getting the behavioral observations to support the anatomical evidence.

The remarkable discovery of Tanzania's highland mangabey in 2003 and 2004 (by two independent research teams) represented Africa's first new monkey discovery in 20 years.
One of the features that established the mangabey as a distinct species is its unique and distinctive call.
Described as a loud, low-pitched ‘honk-bark', the call distinguishes the highland mangabey from its close relatives, the grey-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus albigena) and fl crested mangabey (Lophocebus aterrimus), the calls of which are described as a "whoop-gobble".

He says that although the Kenya Wildlife Service is willing to put up social amenities like schools and dispensaries for the people in their new locations in their bid to win their approval of the relocation, the wildlife body is far from succeeding in its mission.

The Yerkes National Primate Research Center sought to use sooty mangabey monkeys in a first-of-its kind agreement that required scientists to help conserve the species in the wild.
The center has argued that its 230 monkeys, a subspecies of the endangered white-collared mangabey, are not truly endangered.
Yerkes, a part of Emory University, decided to withdraw its research proposal "in light of the possible reconsideration of the sooty mangabey classification status," according to a Sept. 14 letter to the federal government from James Else, Yerkes associate director for research resources.
