  Encyclopedia: Mark Hoffman
His last announcement was his discovery of a copy of the long-vanished 17th-century printed broadside "Oath of a Freeman." The Oath, allegedly a printing from the press that traveled to America on the Mayflower, was a Pilgrim constitution, and would have been the oldest document printed in America.
Though Hoffman's "discoveries" often appeared to bolster the Tanner's own arguments, Jerald had, by early 1984 concluded there was significant doubt as to the Salamander Letter's authenticity, and "to the astonishment of a community of scholars, historians and students, published an attack on the [Salamander] Letter."[1]
The Tanners contend the LDS church's apparent inability to discern the forged documents is evidence against church leadership being divinely inspired.

 Ross Baird's Review
Inventing Mark Twain is not a biography of Mark Twain, but one of "Sam." Andrew Hoffman writes how Sam Clemens lives his life as three distinct personalities: First, there was Sam Clemens, the private person he really was that very few people outside of his family ever knew.
Hoffman writes that popular opinion is that Sam invented Mark Twain because his own ego was too large to fit one persona; Hoffman strongly disagrees.
Hoffman makes a number of assumptions that, taken alone, seem to be a stretch, but when viewed in context, make sense.

The Mark Hoffman Forgeries   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In the 1980's, a man named Mark Hoffman created a number of forged documents, some of which were purchased by the Church.
One of the most famous was the so-called "Salamander Letter." Anti-Mormons occasionally attack the validity of the Church because Church leaders did not know all the documents were fraudulent.
The answer lies in Joseph Smith's declaration that “a prophet was a prophet only when acting as such.” I presume that President Hinckley need not have been exercising prophetic gifts when he made business purchases for the Church.
