In 1987, however, Megawati and her husband joined the Indonesian Democracy Party (PDI), a government-sanctioned party which provided a facade of democratic choice in Suharto's "New Order" regime.
By 1996 the regime realised it had made a mistake in allowing Megawati to enter politics, and forced her removal from the leadership of the PDI.
Megawati was banned from contesting the May 1997 general election.

The election in 1994 of former president Sukarno's daughter, Megawati Sukarnoputri, as head of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) aroused further fears among the ruling Golkar elite.
The election was the first free ballot in Indonesia in 44 years and the result was regarded as crucial to the democratic transformation of the after decades of authoritarian rule.
Many had expected Megawati Sukarnoputri, whose party won the parliamentary elections in July, to win and her surprise defeat in the presidential election provoked violence in Jakarta.
