The prefix 'minor' identifies it as being the smaller of the two (by one semitone); its larger counterpart being, a major sixth.
It is the inversion of the diminished fourth, and in twelve tone equal temperament is enharmonically equal to a minor sixth.
Although they are enharmonicaly equal to minor sixths and have a consonant frequency ratio of 5:8, in the common practice period augmented fifths were considered dissonant or unstable and disallowed.

A Guide to Understanding and Constructing Chords :: Part 5 - Intermediate Chords   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The minor sixth chord, abbreviated "m6," is only slightly different from a major sixth chord - the 3rd is lowered to a minor 3rd, and so the chord's structure becomes root, minor 3rd, 5th, 6th.
Note that the 6th is not lowered to a minor 6th/sharp 5th - think of the minor sixth chord as a minor chord with a 6th, rather than a major chord with a minor 6th.
Minor 9th chords (abbreviated "m9") differ from the dominant 9th chord by only one note - the 3rd is lowered a semitone to a minor 3rd.

Cadences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In the major sixth to octave cadence, usually the lower voice descends by a tone and the upper voice ascends by a semitone (except in the Phrygian cadence, where the two voices are reversed).
In the minor third to unison (or minor tenth to octave) cadence, usually the lower voice ascends by a semitone and the upper descends by a tone (except in the Phrygian cadence).
The leading tone ascends by a whole step from the major sixth to the octave, or descends by a whole step from the minor third to the unison, as is apparent in the examples.

You could think of the resulting arpeggio as a C minor sixth arpeggio (C, Eb, G, A; or root, minor third, fifth, sixth) or as part of an F7 arpeggio with the second (or ninth) note of the F mixolydian scale thrown in.
To execute a common tone sequence, begin with an ordinary C major sixth lick over the C chord, switch to the C minor sixth arpeggio, and then repeat the lick over the F chord using Eb instead of E, as in Example 13.
In Example 15, Ab is the chromatic passing tone between the sixth and the fifth of the C major sixth arpeggio.

Major and Minor Triads   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
On a piano keyboard this triad appears to contain two major thirds and a minor sixth - all of which are consonant, but in actuality the interval between the top and bottom tones is not the consonant minor sixth but the dissonant augmented fifth.
The augmented fifth and the minor sixth may be represented by the same number of semitones in 12-tone equal temperament, but this does not mean that the aural effect of these two intervals is the same.
The intervals of a minor triad from its fifth downwards are a perfect fifth and a major third.

The "sixth" refers to the most common position -- 6-3 (or "first inversion") - where the special note, a semitone above the tonic, is a minor sixth above the bass, ^4.

Looking at the numbers, we can deduce that the melodic minor scale is a minor scale (not THE minor scale everyone talks about - that would be the aeolian mode, but a minor scale none-the-less).
So we could view the melodic minor scale as an aeolian scale with a major seventh (a major sixth in the place of a minor sixth, and a major seventh in place of a minor seventh). We also note that it is very similar to THE dorian mode/scale.
So we could view the melodic minor scale as an dorian scale with a major seventh (a major seventh in place of a minor seventh).
