Mode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In complex systems, in general, a mode is a specific type of operation: for example in a military avionics system, a fighter plane radar might be in track mode or scan mode or track while scan mode, with distinctly different behavior and intention.
In a waveguide or cavity the mode is one of the possible patterns of electromagnetic field.
In acoustics, a mode is one of the possible patterns of vibration, analogous to waveguide and cavity modes, only that electrical and magnetical fields are replaced by velocity and displacement.

I-mode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After a two year development, i-mode was launched in Japan on 22 February 1999.
i-mode is now a global ecosystem where operators design the compatible handsets, give strong editorial and usability rules to content providers, and propose an open business model to them.
i-mode uses open standards as technologies: a light version of HTML is used for producing content, the i-mode mail is interoperable with e-mail, images and sound formats are the ones used on the Web.

The mode is not necessarily unique, unlike the arithmetic mean and the median.
It is most useful when the values or observations are not numeric: for example, while the mode of {1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 9} is 2, the mode of {apple, apple, banana, orange, orange, orange, peach} is orange.
Modes are written in Emacs's LISP, and all modes may not be included with all versions.

 mode on Encyclopedia.com
In the Middle Ages eight modes were developed as a theoretical foundation for plainsong performance, notation, and composition.
These modes, derived from church practice, and explained either in their own terms, or using terms drawn from ancient Greek music theory, were grouped in pairs, each pair containing an authentic mode and a plagal mode, which are distinguished by the difference in the position of their ranges with respect to the final.
The use of medieval modes by later composers is called modality in contrast to tonality.

So creating a directory in safe mode is usually a bad idea since the UID will be different from the script (it will be the apache UID) so it won't be possible to do anything with the files created on this directory.
