 Monarchy in Canada - Gurupedia
In fact, Canada is one of the oldest continuing monarchies in the world, first under the kings of France in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries and then under the British crown in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today, virtually all of the Queen's Canadian duties are performed by her representatives in Canada, the Governor General and the Lieutenant Governors of the provinces, though occasionally the Queen's authority is appealed to by Canada's partisan political leaders.
Monarchists have responded by arguing that having a monarchy, with a Queen of Canada and a governor-general, is one of the key identity differences between the United States and Canada and thus is important to maintain the country's independence from its southern neighbour.

The fact that Canada has inherited a Protestant monarchy does not diminish the Crown's representation of atheists, Jews or people of other religions, says John Aimers, chairman of the Monarchist League, any more than the Pope's Polish nationality excludes Catholics from other countries.
Aimers of the Monarchist League attributes some of an increase in Canadian support for the monarchy within the past year, notably among young people, to a surge in "positive nationalism" in which the Crown is regarded as an institution that clearly distinguishes Canadians from Americans.
