Any leader in Haiti who has a progressive agenda faces the combined opposition of local business leaders, large foreign corporate interests, and gang leaders whose intentions are essentially mercenary, all of whom benefit in some way from insuring that average Haitians do not improve their lot too much.

Music of Haiti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The music of Haiti is influenced most greatly by French colonial ties and African migration (through slavery), as well as by its neighbors, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
Haitian rap music was a major part of the country's musical scene by the late 1980s, laying the groundwork for the emergence of Haitian Wyclef Jean and The Fugees.
In the 1990s, a new musical genre evolved that came to be known as mizik rasin, or "roots music".

It includes a dozen field recordings of the music in its traditional form, from menwat bands to voodoo ceremonies and women singing in the street as they walk to the market.

 Haitian music: compas
Although folkloric Haitian music was the main repertoire of the very popular Jazz des Jeunes, it had lost its momentum with the fall of President Dumarsais Estimé in 1950 and his replacement by General Paul E. Magloire.
The defenders of the attachment of Haiti to its African roots accused Nemours Jean Baptiste of betraying the ethnic fundation of Haitian music.
The turning of compas on its head means that the music returns where it begins to the main rythm, the main musical sentence: "The manman compas".

CD review: "Angels in the Mirror: Vodou Music of Haiti"
Like the Santeria religion of Cuba, Haiti's Vodou (or voodoo as it is often spelled in the States) is a charming mix of Roman Catholicism and the African-derived religions of the slaves.
In the case of vodou, the music is heavily influenced by African traditions.
Rather than simply sharing her knowledge of Haiti and its people, she apparently feels compelled to also share her anti-Western bias in which she blames slavery strictly on Europeans, ignoring the role Africans themselves played in that ugly chapter of history.

Boukman Eksperyans introduced a musical revolution in Haiti in the late-'80s when they overthrew the popular compas music with their new sound Vodou Adjae (also the title of their first album).
Boukman's sound merged dance music with Haiti's religious preoccupation with Vodou (one of the many forms the Yoruban religion took after the Diaspora).
Their music is heavily identified in Haiti with the springtime festival called Rara.

The music drives spiraling African call and response chanting and singing over intricately interlocking voodoo drum rhythms and rara, Haiti's oldest indigenous music, which is played mainly during springtime purification rites in the small mountain villages of the North.

Generally unheralded, the music of Haiti bubbles away beneath the surface, only periodically erupting with tremendous force and influence.
Haiti is known for its version of the popular Spanish dance, the meringue (merengue), as well as the sacred music elsewhere called "voodoo." The folk religion or cult of vaodoun (or vodun, corrupted as "voodoo") is distinguished by French, Indian, and African influences.
Voodoo music exists also in such lurid cult movies as "I Walked with a Zombie." As Hollywood rode the recurring waves of calypso's popularity in the 1930s and the 1950s, voodoo inevitably provided the dramatic imagery.

 Strings
Their point of departure is the folk music from Haiti, however, the sensitive and melodious style of this trio of acoustic guitars crosses boundaries of the other musical rhythms inspired by flamenco and Latin America, with versatility and professionalism.
Their mastery of technique, harmony composition, arrangements and interpretation of musical scores has made them, starting with their first appearance in 1996, one of the favorite performers in the most renowned concert hall in the world.
All of this is due in part to the popular feeling that although contemporary music already existed before "Strings" was founded, from now on it would be hard to conceive of a musical world which does not include these magnificent performers.
