Buxton, ME The Narraganset War was a brief episode of the war against King Philip, chief of the Wampanoags, and it was fought in 1675.
The Massachusetts soldiers who took part in the campaign were promised, in the event of success, grants of land in addition to their usual service pay, but for many years the terms of the promise were not complied with.
He was living in Narraganset No. 1 on the 17th of May, 1751, for on that day he was one of the signers of a petition for a meeting of the proprietors of the Plantation.

In 1643 war broke out between the Mohegan and the Narraganset, and in a battle in which the latter were defeated Miantonomo was taken prisoner.
He was delivered to the English at Hartford, was tried at Boston in September, 1643, by the Court of Commissioners of the United Colonies of New England, who, after referring the platter to the convocation of the clergy, which condemned him, sentenced hint to death at the hands of Uncas.
He was the first signer of the treaty of Oct. 1675, but supplied the strength of the Narraganset war against the English, his young men having long secretly supported Philip.

Before the arrival of the British colonists, about 7,000 Narraganset Indians lived along the west side of the bay and islands, where they fished and farmed in summer and moved into the forest in winter.
They spoke a dialect of the Algonquian language family, as did their neighbours, the Wampanoag to the east and the Niantic and Nipmuc.
These were the Narraganset, Niantic, Nipmuc, Pequot, and Wampanoag, who belonged to the Algonquian family of North American Indians.

He seems to have been friendly to the English colonists of Massachusetts and Connecticut, though he was accused of being treacherous.
In 1643 a quarrel broke out between the Mohegan and the Narraganset, and Mian-tonomo led his warriors against those of Uncas, the Mohegan sachem.
He was defeated and captured at what is now Norwich, Conn., was turned over to the Connecticut authorities, and was later tried at Boston by the commissioners of the United Colonies of New England.

The Narraganset escaped the great pestilence that in 1617 desolated the southern New England coast, and, being joined by numbers of the fugitives from the east, became a strong tribe.
The scattered Narraganset, as they surrendered, were settled among them, and the whole body henceforth took the name of Narraganset.
The Narraganset were ruled by eight chiefs, each of whom had his own particular territory, but was subject to the head chief, who lived at their principal village, called Narraganset, about the site of Kingston.

The colonies were in a state of general despondency, with respect to the restoration of their privileges, and the truth of that divine maxim, "when the wicked beareth rule the people mourn," was, in a striking manner, every where exemplified.

The Narraganset belonged to the Algonquian linguistic family and spoke an n-dialect like the neighboring Massachuset, Wampanoag, and probably the Niantic (East and West) and the Nauset.
The Narraganset are estimated by Mooney (1928) to have numbered 4,000 in 1600, including the Eastern Niantic, and were perhaps as numerous in 1675.
The Narraganset were famed as the most powerful tribe of southern New England and became noted also on account of Roger Williams' dealings with them and his report regarding them.
