NPR attracted these new listeners at the same time that the size of the overall radio audience in the United States was decreasing rapidly as people abandoned the medium in favor of iPods (and similar devices) and satellite radio.
NPR member stations also receive private and government funding, but are famous for raising money through on-air pledge drives, during which programming is interrupted and listeners are encouraged to donate money to keep the station on the air.
NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C. NPR hit the airwaves in April, 1971 with coverage of the United States Senate hearings on the Vietnam War.

You would expect National Public Radio to be better, but here's an interesting comment off the Democrats.com website: "While Pacifica radio devoted the entire day to coverage of the antiwar protests in DC and SF, "listener-supported" NPR spent exactly 2 minutes of its evening news coverage on the story.
As NPR is a public entity financed in part by taxpayers dollars, it's role should always be to provide balanced coverage that presents views from both sides of the spectrum.
NPR is still the best radio "mainstream" news available, but it's increasingly filling time with fluff and infotainment.

National Public Radio (NPR) is a loose network of U.S. radio stations, most of which are on college and university campuses.
NPR is a radio landscape crowded with liberal voices but nearly devoid of conservative and Republican hosts and anchors.
NPR and PBS have been encouraged to wean themselves off taxpayer dollars, and the non-commercial stations of both networks have been given new legal latitude to air spots acknowledging corporate donors - "underwriting spots" that nowadays seem strikingly similar to TV and radio commercials.
