There was an almost equal split between those fathers whose 'paternity leave' was in addition to annual holiday entitlement and those who had to take time from their holiday entitlement to cover this paternity leave period.
Of those whose paternity leave was paid leave in addition to holiday entitlement, the majority (60%) received between 1 and 2 weeks paid leave.
Interestingly, even though paternity leave entitlement legislation has come into place in the last 12 months over 74% of all respondents said they were not aware of any changes to their company's paternity entitlements changing in the last 12 months.

Is Namibia Prepared For Paternity Leave?
Defined as a period of leave from employment that allows fathers to bond with the mother and newborn child, paternity leave can be an important mechanism to encourage fathers to take greater responsibility in their children's upbringing.
Paternity leave is addressed by the International Labor Organization's Workers with Family Responsibilities Recommendation, which provides that both mothers and fathers should have the right to parental leave in order to care for their children.
Because parental leave is highly consistent with the care of children, the failure to provide adequate leave for both mothers and fathers may violate this provision.

It's not even maternity leave for the women, since the season they would be out is likely to be the one they're pregnant, not once the kid is born.
Since the leave appears to cover only the period of pregnancy and physical recovery from childbirth, then the male athlete suing for paternity leave is comparing apples to oranges.
However, my opinion on paternity leave is that any person who becomes a parent to a newborn should be given at least 3 months childcare leave no matter what their gender, sexual orientation, marital status or biological relation to the newborn.

Progressive States Network | Maternity/Paternity Leave (Paid Family Leave)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
THE BIG PICTURE OF FAMILY LEAVE: The 1993 federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was a significant advance for working families, since it gave a large number of employees the right to take up 12 weeks off to care for a new child or take care of a sick family member.
Eleven states have enacted their own family leave statutes to expand employee rights in the private sector, and many more states have extended additional family leave rights to public employeees.
Expanding family leave rights to additional employees is both good for our states' families but also important for the long-term economic health of our states, since time with children in the first months is often critical for long-term child development.
