In 1947, Petra Kelly was born in Günzburg as Petra Karin Lehmann.
Kelly studied Political Science from 1966-1970 at the American University in Washington D.C. She was very successful at the university and won the prize of "Most Outstanding Foreign Woman Student." During the presidential elections of 1968, Kelly worked for Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey.
Petra Kelly was active in the student government and participated in demonstrations against the Vietnam War and racial discrimination.
