Phormium has been treated as a cultivated plant in New Zealand, though only to a limited extent; for the supplies of the raw material dependence has been principally placed on tlfe abundance of the wild stocks and on sets planted as hedges and boundaries by the Maoris.
An idea of the extent of the growth of the fibre may be gathered from the fact that the exports for 1905 amounted to 28,877 bales at a value of nearly 700,000.
Phormium is a cream-colored fibre with a fine silky gloss, capable of being spun and woven into many of the heavier textures for which flax is used, either alone or in combination with flax.

Before buying phormiums, examine the leaf bases carefully and reject any that show signs of mealybugs or their waxy secretions.

Healthy Phormium leaves are rarely attacked by slugs or snails or by leaf-feeding insects.
Occasionally the soft young leaves are damaged (possibly by slugs) as they emerge from between the older leaves and this can result in a characteristic pair of holes that move up the leaf as it develops.
In the book 'New Zealand Trees and Shrubs' by L.J. Metcalf, there are descriptions of two diseases of phormiums: Phormium leaf spot; a fungus disease which causes brownish or greyish, purple-edged spots on the leaves, and Phormium yellow-leaf virus which causes abnormal yellowing of leaves and ultimately, death of the plant.

McBreen et al.-Molecular investigation of Phormium
Abstract Molecular techniques - sequencing of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), and fingerprinting of amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) and intersimple sequence repeats (ISSR) - were investigated for their potential to characterise genetic variation in harakeke (Phormium spp., family Hemerocallidaceae) in New Zealand.
However, both AFLP and ISSR identified genome regions that were polymorphic among intraspecific accessions of Phormium obtained from the National New Zealand Flax Collection.
Further sampling of natural populations is required to understand the origins and present-day distributions of these accessions; however, the present results show the usefulness of these methods for addressing such ethnobotanic questions.
