Evergreen shrub grown for colourful young growth, which is bright red, turning green as the leaves mature.
Forgot to update the page, didn't I? The winter of 2005 was a bit colder than the year before and we had some snow in the second half of February.
Anyway, the Photinia was just fine, although it did suffer a little from some leaf spot during a particularly wet period.

We've all had the misfortune of observing mass installations of fraser photinia succumb to Entomosporium leaf spot that disfigures, defoliates and kills plants.
Chinese photinia is related to the hawthorns and pyracanthas, but unlike these it has no thorns.
The photinia there had been allowed to overtake one corner of the house, but after removing several lower branches and thinning some of the upper ones, I had a nice tree form that provided shade for the hostas and wood ferns I planted beneath.

I think it's me. I lived in California and had lush photinia as a privacy hedge.
Then we noticed that you could begin to see through it and within 3 months it became really thin - some stems lost all their leaves and eventually died.
When I first moved here the Photinia hedge seperating me from my neighbour was thick and lush and provided a great barrier.

My Southern Living Garden Book says the original Fraser Photinia was developed in the early 1940's at the Fraser nursery in Birmingham, Alabama, and was called 'Birmingham.' It was developed as a mildew resistant Photinia but still requires spraying for the fungus-induced leaf spot.
Her photinia has a growing habit more like a large shrubby tree and does well in alkaline soil.
I personally don't care for the poor "Red-Tipped Photinia", but I temper my dislike with the knowledge that they are often planted in the wrong location, and then torturously pruned to maintain a certain height and width.
