Trout Quintet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Trout Quintet is the popular name for the piano quintet in A major by Franz Schubert.
Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, Schubert's piece is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
The composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel has a quintet with the same instrumentation, and the Trout was actually written for a group of musicians coming together to play Hummel's work.

Quintet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In classical instrumental music, any additional instrument (such as a piano, clarinet, oboe, etc.) joined to a the usual string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello), gives the resulting ensemble its name, such as "piano quintet", "clarinet quintet", etc. A piece of music written for such a group is similarly named.
In jazz music a quintet is any group of five players, usually containing a drum set (pedal bass, snaredrum sometimes brushed, and top hat and brushed cymbals), string bass or electric bass, and groups of one or two of the following instruments, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, or trombone.
In some modern bands there are quintets formed from the same family of instruments with various voices, as an all brass ensemble, or all saxophones, in soprano, alto, baritone, and bass, and sometimes double bass.

Amy Beach, Piano Concerto Piano Quintet.
Beach — as she was known in her day, the turn of the 19th century — is undergoing a deserved revival.
Joanne Polk’s ongoing survey of the piano music of Beach should cement a reputation as a composer of taut and lyrical music, especially in smaller formats.
On this release, it is the darkly lyrical Piano Quintet that throws off the most sparks.

Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81
Beethoven composed no such work, nor did Mozart, though both did write quintets for piano and winds, and both Mozart and Haydn wrote keyboard concertos that could be performed with a string quartet instead of an orchestra.
Schubert's one quintet for piano and strings, the well loved "Trout" Quintet, does not utilize a conventional string quartet, but specifies a double bass and one each of the other stringed instruments.
Haydn's contemporary Luigi Boccherini did compose quintets for piano and strings, but it was not until Schumann composed his similarly beloved Quintet in E-flat, in 1842, that the genre came into its own.

The Joachim Raff Society - Piano Quintet
One such chamber master work is Raff's Piano Quintet in a op.107- called by him a "Grand Quintuor" to emphasise the symphonic scale of the work.
Although Raff wrote a Fantasy for piano and string quartet, the Piano Quintet shares with the Cello Sonata the distinction of being the sole example of its genre in Raff's chamber output.
On hearing the completed Quintet, Raff's great friend the conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow wrote to him: "I cannot but admit that your quintet is your best, and the most remarkable work in the field of chamber music since Beethoven".

Dvorák: Piano Quintet and String Quintet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In the String Quintet in G he dispenses with a second viola, instead placing a double bass beneath the single cello, but textural richness is not the composer's aim: one can listen to passages of the work without sensing any pointed differences from quartet texture.
Similarly, the success of the Piano Quintet in A rests on its happy reconciliation of forces.
Dvorák's early attempts at composing for the piano had been hampered by his own lack of familiarity with the instrument, but in this work he achieves a remarkable fluency, with five instruments operating as consistent equals and in harmonious unity and balance.

classical music - andante - enescu: piano quintet; octet in c, op. 7 (arr. desyatnikov)
The expansive (40-minute) Piano Quintet is another masterpiece, but one cut from a very different cloth.
Where the Octet is all ambitious swagger, the Fauréan Quintet is elusive, shy in stating its material, the tonality fugitive, the string-writing in the first of its two movements often engaged in some private conversation over the elliptical piano part, the themes half-glimpsed, like refracted memories of folk song.
Elisabeth Konovaltova provides perceptive programme notes that avoid detailed elucidation of the musical processes at work, but her generalities are usually spot on, as when she writes of the 'thumping vitality' of the finale of the Octet; the presentation is attractive, too.

The Piano Quintet - for piano, two violins, viola and cello - was my first major work of concert music, and formed my main portfolio submission (September 2002) in the context of my Masters degree in Music at Edinburgh University under the supervision of Professor Nigel Osborne.
In writing the quintet I was inspired by other works in the form such as the quintets by Brahms, Elgar, Shostakovich and the recent quintet by Alexander Goehr, which premiered at the 2002 Aldeburgh Festival.
The starting point is a living dialogue between the modern and the romantic ages, through which an attempt is made to make sense of the harmonic gestures of rock, jazz and theatre music within the formal context of romanticism.

Brahms began work on the Quintet during 1862, the year in which he decided to leave his hometown of Hamburg, where he was frustrated by the slow advances in his professional life, to settle in Vienna.
Originally the piece was cast for string quintet with two cellos, the same scoring as Schubert's incomparable C major Quintet.
The Quintet's opening movement, tempestuous and tragic in mood, is in a tightly packed sonata form.

For this quintet I have chosen the more unusual combination of piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass rather than piano and string quartet, due to my desire to achieve deeper sonorities in the bass register.
Double-bassists should relish in the independence of their part, as should players of the viola (which provides the theme of the opening and is treated something like a second violin through-out) and the cello, who are given more melody to work with than in the usual string quartet/quintet.
But I have my doubts of the piano part, which seems very thick and overly left-hand oriented at times (technical problem) and chordal (compositional problem), but I'll leave the experts to pass proper judgment; to me it seems to be meted out the least fun and desirable role in the work.

Classical Net Article - Fano - Piano Quintet
This is not mainly due to the thematic preponderance of the piano, but is due to the peculiar aura of colour which the score takes from the integration, in its writing, of the most complex idiomatic passages drawn from the lexicon of late romantic, virtuoso piano playing.
The peculiar placing of the Quintet within the context of the persisting dichotomy between "musica a programma" and pure music, at the very beginning of the century, is a point of particular interest in this score.
The Quintet seems to want to incarnate a progressive movement from the first category, which is typically Brahmsian and historically linked to the world of chamber music, to the second category, which finds expression, above all, in the field of symphonic poems, to which Fano dedicated himself repeatedly.

He taught piano first at the Hochschule in Berlin and then at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest (later renamed the Liszt Academy of Music), creating generations of pianists (which include Annie Fischer, Georg Solti and Geza Anda).
Although the Piano Quintet in C minor, Op.1 was written when Dohnanyi was 18 and still a student at the Academy, he had already composed and discarded over 60 works.
The Quintet, which was premiered in Budapest with the composer at the piano, came to the attention of Brahms, who was so impressed by it that he arranged a performance in Vienna, which launched Dohnanyi's international career as a composer.
