  The study of popular culture
Instead they tried to describe culture as a whole as a complex formation of discourses which indeed correspond to particular interests, and which indeed can be dominated by specific groups, but which also always are dialectically related to their producers and consumers.
In this way the study of popular culture involves the use of methodologies from both the humanities and the social sciences in the effort to interpret expressive cultural forms, specifically those that are widely disseminated in a group (that is, that are popular) as part of dynamic social intercourse.
Popular culture scholars study these created, expressive and artistic materials as their primary data, much as literary scholars take the novel or the sonnet as their primary data.

 Women in Popular Culture
What often separates popular culture studies from general cultural studies is the extent to which the context (worldviews, attitudes, thoughts, opinions, and lifestyles) of the people who make the art are taken into consideration in studying or evaluating it.
Often popular culture by or for women is mocked (as in the case of romance novels for instance) or less feministic (or pro-woman) than it might seem to be at first (as in the case of female superheroes on television).
Many popular expressive spiritual activities of women continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars of popular culture (as well as those in folklore, religious studies, sociology, anthropology, and women’s studies).

Popular culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Popular culture, or pop culture, (literally: "the culture of the people") consists of the cultural elements that prevail (at least numerically) in any given society, mainly using the more popular media, in that society's vernacular language and/or an established lingua franca.
Historically, commentators on culture defined the term "popular culture" in negative terms as those parts or expressions of culture not accepted into the cultural milieu of the social élite (such as courts, the nobility, patricians or the rich bourgeoisie), nor in an institutionalized context (such as professional theatre, church liturgy, military life).
Some charge that popular culture tends to endorse a limited understanding and experience of life through common, unsophisticated feelings and attitudes and its emphasis on the banal, the superficial, the capricious and the disposable.

 What are Popular Culture Studies?
Popular Culture Studies have come to consist of those scholarly inquiries which deal with the customs, artifacts, events, myths, language, and the like that are shared by a significant portion of a culture or sub-culture.
When scholars study such a culture, or sub-culture, they may focus on the people who share the attitudes, myths, languages, artifacts, or the like, or they may examine features of the culture, its history, or the phenomenon itself.
Scholars of popular culture find such common--one might even say trivial--matters worth serious study, for they believe these matters reflect the values, convictions, and the patterns of thought and feeling generally dispersed through, and approved by, a significant portion of the culture in which they occur.
