Postmark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modern postmarks are often applied simultaneously with the cancellation or "killer" that marks the postage stamp(s) as having been used (though in some circumstances there may be a postmark without a killer, and sometimes the postmark and killer form a continuous design), and the two terms are often used interchangeably, if incorrectly.
Postmarks may be applied by hand or by machines, using methods such as rollers or inkjets, while digital postmarks are a recent innovation.
Postmarks on naval vessels during sensitive operations in wartime are sometimes "clean," showing less information than normally to prevent route of travel or other details from falling into enemy hands.

Postmark   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A postmark is a cancellation or marking made on a postage stamp, letter or package indicating its approximate date of use.
Neither should a postmark be confused with pre-cancels (stamps that have been cancelled before the envelope or package to which they are affixed is submitted or deposited for acceptance into the mailstream, they most commonly have taken the form of a pre-printed city name on the stamp), which generally do not indicate a date.
In the 1800s and early 1900s it was common for letters to receive multiple postmarks indicating the time, date and location of each post office delivering/transporting the letter.

A postmark that is fully struck, and easily legible is more valuable than a spotty or partial strike, or one that "runs off" the edge of the card.
