Electric power transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area.
Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load center, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power.
The fraction of total energy flow (power) which is resistive (as opposed to reactive) power is the power factor.

Power line communication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Power line communication (PLC), also called Mains Communication or Power Line Telecoms (PLT) or Powerband, is a wireline technology that is able to use the current electricity networks for data and voice transmission.
As power lines are typically untwisted and unshielded, they are essentially large antennas, and will broadcast large amounts of radio energy (see the American Radio Relay League's article).
One natural application of narrow band power line communication is the control and telemetry of electrical equipment such as meters, switches, heaters and domestic appliances.

The reduction in magnetic fields for underground lines is not due to shielding, and the reduction in magnetic fields from burying a line is greatest at a distance from the line.
The original studies which suggested an association between power lines and childhood cancer used a combination of the type of wiring and the distance to the residence as a surrogate measure of exposure, a system called "wire codes" [C1, C3, C6].
Wire codes: The original US power line studies used a combination of the type of wiring (distribution vs transmission, number and thickness of wires) and the distance from the wiring to the residence as a surrogate measure of exposure [C1, C2, C3, C6, C7, C12, C29, C30, C36, C45, C46, C47].

 Howstuffworks "How Power Grids Work"
Electrical power is a little bit like the air you breathe: You don't really think about it until it is missing.
It is only during a power failure, when you walk into a dark room and instinctively hit the useless light switch, that you realize how important power is in your daily life.
Your brain likely ignores all of the power lines because it has seen them so often.

 Line installers and repairers
All line installers, or line erectors, install new lines by constructing utility poles, towers, and underground trenches to carry the wires and cables.
Entry-level line installers may be hired as ground workers, helpers, or tree trimmers, who clear branches from telephone and power lines.
Overall employment of line installers and repairers is expected to grow more slowly than the average for all occupations through 2014.

Medium voltage power lines are the electric lines that you see at the top of electric utility poles beside the roadways in areas that do not have underground electric service.
A major challenge is how to deliver the signal from the medium voltage line to the low voltage line that enters your house, because the transformer that lowers the electric power from several thousands volts down to 220/110 is a potential road block to the broadband signal.

Opponents of the 345,000-volt line, the first high-voltage power line built in Wisconsin in decades, are just as determined now as when the line was first proposed four years ago to help ease the state's power woes.
The line is considered vital to the state's fragile power transmission grid, which experienced energy shortages in the late 1990s.
The northwestern Wisconsin line, opponents say, would intrude on the beauty of an unspoiled area that serves as a summer and fall retreat for folks from southern Wisconsin and is home to dairy farmers, as well as retirees and others seeking to get away from it all.

The power line, estimated to cost from $125 million to $175 million, could be in service by 2002 and, if approved, would be the state's first major long-distance power transmission project in 30 years.

The 345,000-volt power line was thought to have been needed as soon as 2011, and was part of a $3.4 billion, 10-year transmission upgrade plan released in September by ATC, the company that owns and operates eastern Wisconsin's major electric lines.
The line was expected by some to be controversial, because it would have used some of the same right of way used in recent years by Wisconsin Gas Co. to build a natural gas lateral pipeline in Ixonia.
