Topographic prominence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The prominence of that peak is the height of that island.
Prominence is interesting to mountaineers because it is an objective measurement that is strongly correlated with the subjective significance of a summit.
Lists with a high topographic prominence cutoff tend to favour isolated peaks or those that are the highest point of their massif; a low value, such as the Nuttalls', results in a list with many summits which may be viewed by some as insignificant.

 Prominences and Plages
Prominences are features that may reach high into the corona, often as graceful loops that may hang suspended for many days.
Quiescent prominences are extremely stable features and remain suspended in the corona where they slowly evolve and become more elongated over the course of several solar rotations (a timescale of a few months).
Prominences are usually associated with regions of sunspot activity, and are clearly associated with the Sun's magnetic field.

Prominence is the vertical distance a given summit rises above the lowest col connecting it to a higher summit.
Prominence is defined as the vertical distance a given summit rises above the lowest col connecting it to a higher summit.
Calculating the prominence of a peak can be very tedious work, since the key col is often very far away from a high-prominence peak, and it can take hours to pore over maps, following obscure divide lines to find the low point of a connecting ridge.

 Solar Prominence
Though these structures, called "prominences", appear to be very bright and hot, they are actually hundreds of times cooler and denser than the surrounding gases in the Sun's corona or outermost atmosphere.
They are actually prominences that are silhouetted against the much brighter solar surface.
Erupting prominences are closely associated with an important space weather event called a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).

 Prominence
Prominence is a "first-order" quantity, namely how much elevation you would have to drop when traversing between your peak and the nearest higher peak via the highest connecting saddle.
A related point is that in many cases the prominence is based on a saddle that is nowhere near the standard hiking route.
Apropos all of these points, prominence misses the significant value in climbing all over a large massif or mountain area, as opposed to a "hit and run" approach of only climbing the most prominent point.

The concept of prominence is not very clearly defined, but it is obvious that it refers to those words or syllables, which are perceived as standing out from their environment [14].
The sum of all marks per word results in a prominence scale, where words with a low degree of prominence could perhaps be interpreted as words with realized lexical stress and words with a high degree of prominence be interpreted as carrying sentence accent.
First, the prominent and the non-prominent words can be selected: the non-prominent words are the words which are never marked as prominent, and the prominent words are the words which are judged by 8 or more of the listeners.
