Quail is a collective name for several genera of mid-sized birds in the pheasant family Phasianidae, or in the family Odontophoridae.
The New World quails are not closely related, but are named for their similar appearance and behaviour.
The Old World buttonquails are also in a different family Turnicidae, and are completely unrelated to the true quails.

The scaled quail is a bird of semidesert grasslands and the Chihuahuan desert, preferring open plains and foothills; the Mearns’ quail prefers oak woodlands and oak savannas in the southeastern portions of the state where grass cover is abundant enough to conceal its presence.
Scaled quail numbers are determined by both the success of the hatch and the number of birds surviving from the year before.

The Gambel's quail (Callipepla gambelii ignoscens), the desert quail of northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States, is at the easternmost limit of its range in a narrow strip of desert shrub and irrigated farmland bordering the Rio Grande from about the ghost town of Lajitas northward to El Paso.
Quail also need food in the form of seeds, greens, and insects, and require surface water if watery foods such as succulent plants and insects are not to be had.
The Mearns quail, intolerant of heavy grazing and particularly of grazing by sheep and goats, is almost gone in Texas, its most eastern habitat, though it remains unendangered farther west.
