  Quercus acerifolia
Common name and species name (acer = maple and folia = leaf) are both in reference to the resemblance of the leaves of this oak to those of the sugar maple (Acer saccharum).
Maple-leaf oak was first described in 1926 by Palmer and was given the name of Quercus shumardii var.
Recent efforts by Stoynoff and Hess have resulted in the elevation of this plant to full species status (in large part due to differences in leaf and acorn morphology).

The vegetation surface for Quercus (oak) (above left) shows this taxon at Wheatfen to be the dominant canopy forming species on the western dryland areas.
Quercus pollen (obove right) is not uniformly distributed in the pollen samples from the carr, values are notably higher close to the western edge of the carr and the central areas of wet woodland where Quercus is present as a minor element in the vegetation.
The presence of Quercus within the wetland area probably accounts for much of the variability noted in Quercus pollen representation within 50 m of the dryland edge.
