Ralph Bakshi may be best known as the director of the first X-rated animated feature, Fritz the Cat, and the critically acclaimed Heavy Traffic, Wizards, and Lord of the Rings; but his career in animation began much earlier than that.
Ralph Bakshi is heralded as the first to introduce personal adult themes to a largely Disney-oriented medium.
Ralph currently resides in New York, and pursues his life as a painter when he is able to take time away from his various film projects.

Ralph Bakshi (October 1938) is a director of animated and occasionally live-action films.
As the American animation industry fell into decline during the 1960s and 1970s, Bakshi tried to bring change to the industry by creating and directing a number of animated feature films that were aimed at adults instead of children.
Bakshi had originally intended his adaptation to be made in three parts, later reduced to two parts after negotiation with the studio.

Bakshi ran into trouble when he was unable to complete the battle sequences with the budget 20th Century Fox had given him, and the studio refused to raise his funds.
Bakshi worked on a short-lived animated TV series called Spicy City in 1997, and in 2003 he was the model for and the voice of the eccentric, midget-hating Fire Chief in protégé John Kricfalusi's Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon.

Bakshi ended up graduating with an award in cartooning in 1957, (10) Bakshi went to work for Terrytoons Animation Studio (11, 12) in New Rochelle as a cell polisher, graduating to cell painting.
Practicing nights and weekends he quickly became an inker, and then directly to animator (by claiming an empty desk on the animators floor and, claiming that he was promoted to animator, (13) asked for scenes to animate for characters such as Mighty Mouse, Heckle & Jeckle, (14) Deputy Dawg, Foofle & Lariat Sam.
In 1967 Bakshi (17) accepted the position of Producer and Director of Paramount Cartoon Studios (aka Famous Studios) which had been the Max Fleicher Studio.

Until recently, the only way you could see Ralph Bakshi's 1980 animated feature American Pop was on cable, if Cinemax bothered to show it.
When a bashful young man visits a demurely half-dressed stripper in her dressing room, Bakshi is just as bashful and demure about cutting away from what happens between them.
