 Metroactive Music | Rancid
The members of Rancid have made many a business decision that defied good sense, just because the decision was more ethical: such as loaning their tour bus to the Ramones' crew for Lollapalooza, and staying on the Epitaph label when many others would have left it.
Rancid is often accused of sounding like the Clash, and though at times the band does show off elements of the Clash's sound in its mix (even invoking the famous Clash shout of "Sandanista!" on one number), one would be foolish to leave it at that.
Rancid also sounds like very, very early Bruce Springsteen and (on "Warsaw," in particular) the Pogues, but mostly the band sounds like itself: energetic, honest, tuneful and totally, utterly positive.

Rancid: Indestructible - PopMatters Music Review
Rancid was successful, however, and paved the way for 1994's blistering Let's Go and 1995's breakthrough And out Come the Wolves.
These albums demonstrated that Rancid was far more than an underground group or flavor of the minute; the band was a talented unit, true to their musical influences and capable of competing on the broader level with the hits "Ruby Soho" and "Time Bomb".
This is nothing new to Rancid fans, but it does take away from the scope of the group's songwriting skills, (although not many punk aficionados are looking to become enlightened through socially conscious lyrics).

Back to the one-two punch of primal hardcore punk, like Discharge or the Exploited or, maybe at their most tuneful, early, early Social D. These bands all came after the Clash, but times were tough and they were reaching back to something harder, faster, louder, and less complicated even than "Clash City Rockers."

Rancid is a meaner, denser, angrier, more explosive album than anyone had any reason to expect, though it isn't without the occasional oasis of melody, like "Let Me Go," an echo-laden anthem with a nice little rusty hook poking through the fuzztone guitars.

Now Rancid have changed music format, but none of it can even be compared to the crap thats played now.

From Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman's childhood friendship in the working class enclave of Albany, CA (a one-square-mile town bordering Berkeley), to the subsequent additions of Brett Reed and Lars Frederiksen (in 1991 and 1993, respectively), they have depended on one another for friendship, support and even survival for the better part of a decade.
