Computer model takes in earthquake data and runs a simulation in real time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A 7.7 earthquake would be 14 times the power of 1994 Northridge.
The team also hopes to simulate past earthquakes to see if their models produce the same effects.
In time, they hope to simulate earthquakes yet to occur, but certain to happen based on earthquake patterns.

  Time [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
If physical time, psychological time, and biological time are three different kinds of time, then three answers are required to the question "What is time?" and some commentary is required regarding their relationships, such as whether one is the most fundamental.
Spacetime is four-dimensional and a continuum, and time is a distinguished, one-dimensional sub-space of this continuum.
Proper time along a worldline in 4-d spacetime is the time elapsed by an object having that worldline, as shown on an ideal clock having the same worldline.

In this case, the timing constraints are in the form of a period and deadline.
Real time does not mean fast; it means that a system has timing constraints that must be met to avoid failure.
The response time is the time between the moment the brake pedal is pressed, and the moment the anti-lock braking software actuates the brakes.

An Introduction to WebLogic Real Time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Before we start talking about WebLogic Real Time we have to think about the two words introduced with this product name: "real" and "time." Numerous definitions of real time exist and many articles describe the various concepts— the first Java Specification Request (JSR 1) was even dedicated to this topic.
The time required by all operations must be bounded for the timing of the system to be called predictable.
Real time is a level of computer responsiveness that a user perceives as sufficiently immediate, or that enables the computer to keep up with some external process.

Real-time computing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A real time system may be one where its application can be considered (within context) to be mission critical.
While current usage implies that a computation that is 'fast enough' is real time, originally it referred to a simulation that proceeded at a rate that matched that of the real process it was simulating.
Analog computers, especially, were often capable of simulating much faster than real time, a situation that could be just as dangerous as a slow simulation if it were not also recognized and accounted for.

Real-time operating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
More recent CPUs take far less time to switch from one task to another (the extreme case is barrel processors that switch from one task to the next in zero cycles).
The critical response time, sometimes called the flyback time, is the time it takes to queue a new ready task and restore the state of the highest priority task.
Since an interrupt handler blocks the highest priority task from running, and since real time operating systems are designed to keep thread latency to a minimum, interrupt handlers are typically kept as short as possible.

 Real-Time Overview
The most familiar example of a time constraint is a deadline, which is (properly but not popularly) defined as a time until which the activity's completion has more utility to the system, and after which the activity's completion has less utility.
The general case of a deadline (which is a soft deadline) has utility measured in terms of lateness (completion time minus deadline), tardiness (positive lateness), or earliness (negative lateness).
The first component is to meet all the hard deadlines, and/or to minimize the number of missed, or the mean tardiness of, the soft deadlines; this is the optimality component of the goal.

GameSpot Presents: A History of Real-Time Strategy Games
Trying to imagine a time without real-time strategy games is perhaps a bit like trying to imagine a time before the World Wide Web: We all know it existed, but as gamers, we can't quite understand how we got along back then.
Real-time strategy changed all of that so that games would begin to more closely resemble reality: Time was limited, and if you wasted yours, your opponents would probably be taking advantage of theirs.
Although games such as Populous and SimCity are certainly played in real time, these give rise to the "god game" genre, which includes such titles as the city-builder series from Impressions, Will Wright's innovative designs, and much of Peter Molyneux's work, including the upcoming Black & White.

What is real time? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Real time can also refer to events simulated by a computer at the same speed that they would occur in real life.
In graphics animation, for example, a real-time program would display objects moving across the screen at the same speed that they would actually move.

Many developers typically think that "real-time" means "really fast" as in moment to moment interaction with the system.
While we work to keep Java RTS fast, real-time in the RTSJ context means "the ability to reliably and predictably respond to a real-world event".
The RTSJ specifies several ways to specify high-resolution (nanosecond accuracy) time including absolute time and relative time.

 Research on Real-time CORBA
This paper describes how we have extended our distributed object visualization environment (DOVE) framework to monitor the timing behavior of a real-time application that generates and processes two separate streams of simulated sensor data events.
The principal contributions of this paper are: 1) applying the DOVE framework to a simulated sensor-driven application, 2) extending the DOVE framework to support new application requirements, and 3) demonstrating and visualizing quality of service (QoS) control for multiple event streams within a real-time CORBA Event Service.
Ideally, these applications can be developed using standard middleware components like CORBA to improve their quality and reduce their cost and cycle time.
