Richard Laurence Millington Synge was born on October 28, 1914, in Liverpool, England, to Laurence Millington Synge, a stockbroker, and Katherine Charlotte (Swan) Synge.
Synge was able to join Martin there in 1939, when he received a scholarship from the International Wool Secretariat for his work on amino acids in wool.
Synge and Martin had made early progress on partition chromatography during their time at Cambridge, but the need by industry and medicine for a more reliable technique spurred further research.

Synge was born in Liverpool and studied at Winchester College and at Cambridge University.
Synge and Martin announced their technique in 1944; it was soon being applied to a wide variety of experimental problems.
Paper chromatography is so precise that it can be used to identify amino acid concentration, as well as type, enabling Synge to work out the exact structure of the antibiotic peptide Gramicidin-S, a piece of research important to Frederick Sanger's determination of the structure of insulin in 1953.

In 1941, Archer John Porter Martin and Richard Laurence Millington Synge, working for the Wool Industries Research Association in England, created liquid-liquid partition chromatography.
In 1940, Martin and Synge ground up the silica gel being used as a drying agent inside a balance case, added water, put it in a column, and poured chloroform plus their amino acid mixture through it.
Although Martin and Synge had predicted GLC in their original paper on liquid-liquid chromatography in 1941, no one had taken them up on it, so Martin decided to try it himself.

He received the 1952 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, together with Richard Laurence Millington Synge (who died in 1994), for their development of partition chromatography.
Martin was introduced to Richard Synge by Sir Charles Martin, and together they built a 40 stage, counter-current extraction apparatus to separate amino acids by partition between two solvents.
His 1941 paper with Synge was certainly the most important he wrote, as they not only described the principles and theory of partition chromatography, but also suggested the possibility of gas-liquid and high-pressure liquid chromatography, both of which have become vitally important analytical techniques.
