Roberta Flack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roberta Flack (born February 10, 1939 in Asheville, North Carolina) is an American singer.
A notable performer in the areas of jazz, soul, and folk, Flack is best known for singles such as "Killing Me Softly With His Song", which won the 1974 Grammy for Record of the Year, and "Where Is the Love", the latter being one of her many duets with Donny Hathaway.
Flack began her professional career recording for Atlantic Records without much success, until one of her earliest recordings, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, (1969) was included on the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood's directorial debut Play Misty for Me; it became a #1 hit in 1972.

 Roberta Flack
Roberta Flack covered a fair amount of ground in her ten years of commercial success: starting as a jazz-fusion stylist, she moved on to intricately-produced pop and even disco.
The closest thing to Flack's later work is the hit single "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," where her unpretentious singing is a perfect match for the uncluttered melody and arrangement.
Though as usual Flack didn't write a note on the album, it's a fine introduction to her approach - the only real dud is at least interesting: the string-fest "Suzanne" (another Cohen cover).

Flack is more than just a singer—she is a musician able to play a variety of instruments including (most specifically) piano and flute.
Flack may not have the best vocal talent to have ever existed, but she wields it with great confidence.
I honestly think Flack is strongest as a solo artist despite the fact that six of the seventeen songs on this album are duets (including four with her late collaborator Donny Hathaway).

The former two solidified her appeal to a new generation of educated, urban African Americans, while the latter became an unadulterated smash across the board and a critical favorite of a scope perhaps still unmatched by any subsequent album of duets.
Flack slowed down her recording schedule over the next couple of years, but came back in 1977 with another classic duet with Hathaway, “The Closer I Get To You” (most recently remade by Luther Vandross and Beyonce).
She also continues to be admired by a younger generation of intelligent, creative soul singers whose pathway to success was in large part paved by this talented, classic soul artist.

Two classy albums, First Take and Chapter Two, garnered considerable acclaim for their skilful, often introspective, content before Flack achieved huge success with a poignant version of folk-singer Ewan MacColl 's ballad, 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'.
Recorded in 1969, it was a major international hit three years later, following its inclusion in the film Play Misty For Me. Further hits came with 'Where Is The Love?' (1972), a duet with Donny Hathaway, and 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' (1973), where Flack's penchant for sweeter, more MOR-styled compositions gained an ascendancy.
