The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a professional body representing and regulating property professionals and surveyors of all types.
The institution was founded in London in 1868 as the "Institution of Surveyors" and has occupied headquarters on the corner of Great George Street and Parliament Square since that date.
The institution received its Royal Charter in 1881 and became the "Institution of Chartered Surveyors" in 1930.

The Royal Institution, in Albemarle Street, was incorporated by royal charter of George III., in 1808, for the purpose of diffusing the knowledge, and facilitating the general introduction of useful mechanical inventions and improvements, and for teaching, by courses of philosophical lectures and experiments, the application of science to the common purposes of life.
ROYAL INSTITUTION OF GREAT BRITAIN, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, was founded for the promotion and diffusion of science and useful knowledge, in 1799, at the house of Sir Joseph Banks, the then president of the Royal Society, and incorporated by Royal Charter, in 1800.
His lectures in the plain little theatre of the Royal Institution in Albemarle Street, from behind the table laden with apparatus for experiments, were much frequented, perhaps the most popular of them being "The Chemical History of a Candle".

The Royal Manchester Institution was an English learned society founded on 1 October 1823 at a public meeting held in the Exchange Room by Manchester merchants, local artists and others keen to dispel the image of Manchester as a city lacking in culture and taste.
The Institution was housed in a building in Mosley Street designed by Charles Barry in 1824.
The Institution held regular art exhibitions, collected works of fine art and promoted the arts generally from the 1820s until 1882 when the building and its collections were transferred under Act of Parliament to Manchester Corporation.

Administrative/Biographical history: The Polytechnic Institution was opened in August 1838 to provide the public with (in the words of its prospectus of 1837) 'a practical knowledge of the various arts and branches of science connected with Manufactures, Mining Operations, and Rural Economy'.
By 1841 the Institution was calling itself the Royal Polytechnic, probably due to the patronage of Prince Albert.
