Previous versions of Samba would map PC filename characters that are not legal on MPE to "_XX_", where "XX" is the hexadecimal value of the filename character in question.
Samba 2.2.8a now allows the "_" mapping delimiter to be reconfigured to any value.

Fortunately, it's easy to install, and if you do a default install, it doesn't conflict with the Samba that came with your distro, although as soon as you're sure that Samba 3.0.1 is solid, you'll want to delete your distro provided older Samba.
