Scarborough RT (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scarborough RT is a public transport metro line in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
It is operated by the Toronto Transit Commission and administered as part of its subway system, although the Scarborough RT differs technologically from the city's other three lines in a number of respects.
Although the Scarborough RT line is heavily-used, its future is uncertain, as its fleet has never been expanded since it opened, and consists entirely of ICTS Mark I trains, which are no longer produced.

Transit Toronto - Content: The Scarborough Rapid Transit Extension
When the Scarborough RT opened to just past the Scarborough Town Centre in 1985, the next phase of the project would have taken the line to the abandoned right-of-way of the Canadian Northern, which proceeded northwest from the McCowan/Ellesmere intersection, past the Sheppard/Markham intersection, to the corner of Finch and Morningside.
The result is that the RT is frozen in place, which is unfortunate because land for a further extension is ready to be used.
All the elements that have gone in to the Scarborough RT have conspired to rob it of a meaningful future.

The TTC uses the term 'rapid transit' internally to describe all four lines, but in general public usage it is normally applied only to the Scarborough RT line, which is mostly elevated, while the other three are referred to as 'subways'.
The Scarborough RT is an intermediate-capacity line built almost entirely above ground, which has no direct track connections to the other lines and uses a separate fleet of trains based on dramatically different technology (similar to those of the Vancouver SkyTrain).
The tracks of Toronto's streetcars and subways (apart from the Scarborough RT) are built to the unique gauge of 1.495 m (4 feet 10 7/8 inches), slightly wider than the usual standard of 1.435 m (4 feet 8 1/2 inches).

The Scarborough RT or SRT is an ICTS (Intermediate Capacity Transit System) light rail public transit system in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that uses linear induction technology.
Although the RT trains are symmetrical, at this station they originally reversed on a loop like single-ended streetcars.
The station is on four levels: RT (top), buses, entry concourse, subway, with the RT and subway tracks parallel.

The Scarborough RT rehabilitation work must be done in order to return the elevated structure to a state of good repair, and to ensure that the structure reaches the planned 50-year design life.
Shortening the hours of Scarborough RT operation, to increase the available working time, was investigated in order to complete the project within a shorter time period, and to make more efficient use of capital funds.
Closing the Scarborough RT approximately one-and-a-half to two hours earlier each night will save approximately $1.5 million dollars in construction costs, and will shorten the duration of the project from approximately 21 months to 10 months, compared to doing the work during the usual evening shut down.

The RT was chosen because it was a new, made-in-Canada technology that needed showcasing.

I’m willing to bet that 95% of the riders on the Scarborough RT start or end their journeys elsewhere on the rapid transit network.
These riders board overcrowded trains at the Scarborough Town Centre, pass three intermediate stops — two of which are among the least used in the system — and finally reach Kennedy, where they stop, descend three flights of stairs, and board waiting subway trains to take them the rest of the way on their journey.
As the Scarborough RT comes up for renewal, the TTC should consider scrapping it, replacing it with an extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line from Kennedy to Scarborough Centre.
