I think it's instructive to ask, in exactly what respect did SGI "ignore Moore's Law?" The answer certainly can't be that they failed to take advantage of process improvements, since the MIPS processors that powered the SGI line (post-1992, with the R4000) got smaller and faster just like everything else.
Ultimately, a combination of at least three factors (I'm sure there are others) seems to have destroyed SGI hardware's value proposition: 1) the decline of the RISC advantage, 2) the decline of the workstation's relative bus bandwidth advantage, and 3) increased specialization.
Perhaps there's a lesson there for the reigning industry darling that currently occupies SGI's former campus in Silicon Valley, a company that relies on mysteries and fl magic to maintain its dominance in an industry that didn't even exist when SGI was in its heyday.
