  Kanjuro Shibata XX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On-yumishi Kanjuro Shibata XX(御弓師 二十代 柴田 勘十郎 Shibata Kanjūrō), Sensei (born 1921) is twentieth in a line of master bowmakers and a Kyudo teacher of the Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha(日置流備州竹林派) tradition.
Shibata served as the Bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan from 1959 until 1994, when his adopted son, Nobuhiro, was recognized as the 21st in the Shibata lineage and assumed the duties of Imperial Bowmaker.
In Japan, Shibata became concerned that his students were too fixated on merely hitting the target, and were treating Kyudo as a sport rather than a meditative art.

His forces, under the leadership of Sakuma Morimasa, besieged Nakagawa Kiyohide at Shizugatake in a move to turn the tide launching the battle of Shizugatake.
Sakuma ignored Shibata's orders to merely test enemy's defence and was destroyed by returning Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces.

Shibata served Nobunaga at the Battle of Okehazama (1560) against the Imagawa, and in the Oda's war with the Saito of Mino (1561-1563).
Theoretically part of Shibata's fief since 1573, Kaga was in fact under the sway of the Ikko-ikki, and required strenuous effort to be brought to bear, particularly since after 1577 the Uesugi of Echigo were openly hostile to the Oda.
Shibata was present for the Battle of Tedorigawa that year, in which Uesugi Kenshin defeated Oda Nobunaga and pushed Uesugi influence well into Kaga.

Onyumishi Kanjuro Shibata is a 20th generation master bowmaker and archer and 3rd generation "Bowmaker to the Emporer of Japan" (retired).
In 1980, by the invitation of The Venerable Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan meditation master, and founder of Shambhala International and Naropa University, Kanjuro Shibata XX came to the United States from Japan to teach Kyudo and together with Trungpa, founded Ryuko Kyudojo (Dragon-Tiger Kyudo Practice Hall) in Boulder, Colorado.
In the mid 16th century the first Kanjuro Shibata lived in Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan and was the master bowmaker for the powerful Shimazu samurai clan.
