In Shivaree, LA-area guitarist/bassist Duke McVinnie, keyboardist Danny McGough (from Tom Waits' touring band) and the improbably but wondrously named vocalist Ambrosia Parsley stake out ground somewhere between the Cowboy Junkies and Sparklehorse — moody, moderately psychedelic, sometimes spooky Americana music with strong, distinctive female vocals.
With Parsley's megawatt charisma, Shivaree should've been set; instead they were basically shot in the head by their label.
Rough Dreams, Shivaree's second longplayer, fell into that phantom dimension in which albums are recorded, release dates announced, advertising space bought, promotional interviews and features published, reviews printed (almost always positive to downright glowing, which makes the phenomenon even odder) then never released.

I've listened to the Shivaree album a few times, and felt it a little too scattered--the only song on it that I think demands to be listened to is "Goodnight Moon"--definitely one of the best songs of the past year.
Shivaree is back with another group of songs with eclectic influences--all the same ones from their first album, more electric, and some electronica too.
The new style is a combination of the best elements of their two previous releases, a return to the eclectic can't-quite-pin-it-down bluesy country-rock of I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head...

At times, it seems as if one could hear the rush of air passing through her vocal cords and her throat as she plies her warm cresting and falling melodies around the band’s arrangements, breathing her way through songs that create a distinct, gently psychedelic mood.
Shivaree nail the mystery in Brian Eno’s perverse tale of intrigue "The Fat Lady of Limbourg," which Parsley sings as if its words were peanut-butter taffy and she’d just polished off a martini.
Their semi-acoustic endeavors are full of unexpected ticks like the "sprong" of an amp’s reverb box being kicked, bells that suddenly ring in the mix, or sudden downrushes on a baritone guitar.

Shivaree's 1999 debut, I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in This Dump, served up a bolt of spooked Americana full of eclectic sounds and randy songs about spankings and cannibals.
One of those is a cover of Brian Eno's "The Fat Lady of Limbourg", which Shivaree translates into a covert ops blues strut, driven by Danny McGough's chugging organ.
As Shivaree provide credible C&W backing, he and Parsley sing about a fateful hospital stay and their voices blend perfectly as they rhyme "goosies" with "moosies" without sounding cutesy.

Seemingly inspired by film scores, Shivaree's music is cinematic in that it deflects attention away from itself, and it cries out for a visual context to complement.
But your imagination is left to its own devices, and one's forced to become cinematographer for the scripts these songs tend to be, and that effort severely inhibits one's ability to empathize, simply experience the songs directly and inhabit their drama.

Shivaree may have some cool instrumentation (damn, who don't love a good banjo?), but the group owes most of its appeal to its singer and songwriter, Ambrosia Parsley.
However, there are a couple clunkers on which the band forgets that "haunting" does not have to mean "comatose" ("Lost in a Dream" and "Baby Girls" are good for sleeping to, but not much else).
Shivaree could be a little pluckier or more musically adventurous, but its atmospheric twang should be a refreshing and comfortable listen for any fans of jazzy, soundtrack-ready alt-country.

Literal interpretation of one line of form can be dangerous but with Value Plus having chased home both Russian Blue and Democratic Deficit within a six-day period in May, it can’t be unreasonable to suggest that Shivaree wouldn’t be too far off those seemingly top-class Irish-trained colts with her fillies allowance of 5lbs.
