Solfege was a pedagogical technique created by Guido of Arezzo.
The syllable names come from a formerly well-known medieval hymn, entitled Ut queant laxis, in which each successive verse starts on the next higher scale degree in the major scale; The first word in each verse corresponds to the solfege syllable, with the exception of "Do," which was "Ut" in the hymn.
In colloquial language, singers sometimes use "solfege" and "sight reading" as synonyms, though sight reading[?] can also mean reading the piece without benefit of previous study, or numerical sight-singing, where the hard-to-memorize solfege syllables are replaced by the numbers one through seven.

Thinking of solfege with a movable DO allows you to always think of the tonic note, no matter what mode you are playing, as DO.
To play in modes other than Ionian Major you must learn the names for the chromatic notes, but it makes sense for people who think of their music as relative intervals and only think about the note at the beginning of the tune when the find the tonic for the key that they are playing.

[smt-list] RE: [smt-list] Solfège syllables as note names   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In my humble opinion: -- Fixed-do solfege as a solmization system makes perfect sense in those countries where students learn those syllables as the names of the notes, and filter all notated and heard pitch information through those names from their earliest musical experiences (what Charles is running into with some of his students).
-- Movable-do solfege, while it incorporates the advantage of reinforcing and developing relative pitch (the pitch perception and correlation system which most musicians possess), requires the student to learn what in effect are a set of nonsense syllables to stand for the degrees of the major scale.
As a solmization system, movable do has ONLY historical precedent (and, some would argue, excellent singability) to recommend it (and, as Charles is discovering, having to switch from fixed-do to movable-do is causing some students headaches).
