  Tarentum, Italy - LoveToKnow 1911
A feud with the Thurians for the district of the Siris was settled in 432 by the joint foundation of Heraclea, which, however, was regarded as a Tarentine colony.
In the 4th century Tarentum was the first city of Magna Graecia, and its wealth and artistic culture at this time are amply attested by its rich and splendid coins; the gold pieces in particular (mainly later than 360) are perhaps the most beautiful ever struck by Greeks (see Numismatics).
Then followed war with Rome (281) in consequence of the injudicious attack of the mob on the Roman fleet in the harbour of Tarentum and on the Roman garrison at Thurii, the expedition of Pyrrhus, whom Tarentum summoned to its aid, and at length, in 272, the surrender of the city by its Epirote garrison.

Tarentum, or Taras, the Greek name, was one of some sixty or 90 Spartan colonies that flourished in the years 700 BC to 300 AD.
The people of Tarentum took pride in a legend that their city's founder, having, been shipwrecked, was carried ashore on the back of a dolphin to the site on which their city; was subsequently built.
The Tarentum coinage is embraced in the third expansion of Greek city coinages, the first stage originating in Asia and confined to those cities located in the narrow, crescent shaped strip of territory extending, around the western end of Asia Minor from the Black Sea on the north to the Mediterranean on the South.

Archytas of Tarentum - Cambridge University Press
Aristoxenus was from Tarentum and began his philosophical career as a Pythagorean, so that it is not a surprise that he should choose to write a life of his countryman, but that choice also reflects the prominence of Archytas.
Initially, however, Tarentum was overshadowed by the Greek colonies founded by the Achaeans further west on the gulf of Tarentum: Croton and Sybaris.
The clearest assertion of Tarentum’s leadership of the league by the literary tradition is found in the rather imprecise language of the entry for Archytas given in the Suda (A2).

 Archytas (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Archytas of Tarentum was a Greek mathematician, political leader and philosopher, active in the first half of the fourth century BC (i.e., during Plato's lifetime).
Some scholars have argued that Tarentum's ties to Sparta and the supposed predilection of the Pythagoreans for aristocracy will have insured that Tarentum did not remain a democracy long and that it was not a democracy under Archytas (Minar 1942, 88-90; Ciaceri 1927-32, II 446-7).
Strabo, however, explicitly describes Tarentum as a democracy at the time of its flourishing under Archytas (A4), and the descriptions of Archytas' power in Tarentum stress his popularity with the masses and his election as general by the citizens (A1 and A2).
