Tetrahydrocannabinol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
(THC) is the active chemical in cannabis and is one of the oldest hallucinogenic drugs known.
The mode of action of THC is still not properly understood, although it is known that of the two stereoisomers (mirror images), the (-)-form (the left-handed form of the molecule) is 10-15 times more potent than the (+)-form.
Also, as THC increases the appetite and reduces the vomit response, it is starting to be used in the treatment of anorexia and other eating disorders.

With regard to THC limits in food, the data situation is fortunate, as the daily THC intake of chronic Cannabis consumers (50-200 mg or 1-3 mg/kg BW, respectively) already clearly exceeds the daily doses of relevance to this study (0.1-0.2 mg/kg) by a factor of 10-15.
THC crosses the blood-brain barrier comparatively easily and accumulates in fatty tissues from where it is re-released only slowly into other tissues, such as the blood.

Evaluating Interference of THC in Hemp Food Products
The presence of THC in hemp foods has raised concern over their potential interference with employee drug-testing programs in the U.S. Studies conducted in 1995—1997 showed that eating hemp foods may in fact cause positive urine tests for marijuana.
THC was consumed in 15 milliliter (mL) doses–equivalent to one tablespoon (0.6 mg in 20 mL)–of four different blends of hemp and canola oils.
The table shows the daily THC doses administered during the study and the corresponding amounts of hemp oil and hulled seeds–containing 5 and 2 ppm THC, respectively–that would have to be eaten to ingest the same amounts of THC.

 THC Synthesis - Overview
The syntheses of THC-A, THC-B, or THC-C are all based on the condensation of olivetol (5-(n-amyl)-resorcinol) with a second component which forms the left-hand and center ring of the THC molecule.
The THC containing an n-amyl side chain on the right-hand ring is identical to the active component of hashish or marihuana.
The synthesis is as for THC, except that in method I pentanonitrile is replaced by hexanonitrile, while in method II 1-bromo-butane is replaced by an equivalent amount of 1-bromo-pentane.

THC is highly lipid soluble, and plasma and urinary elimination half-lives are best estimated at 3-4 days, where the rate-limiting step is the slow redistribution to plasma of THC sequestered in the tissues.
THC is rapidly and extensively metabolized with very little THC being excreted unchanged from the body.
A majority of THC is excreted via the feces (~65%) with approximately 30% of the THC being eliminated in the urine as conjugated glucuronic acids and free THC hydroxylated metabolites.

Inhaled THC Produces Better Blood Levels than THC by Mouth
It might be argued that the association of THC plasma concentrations to the incidence of nausea and vomiting is not causally related to an antiemetic effect of THC, but rather due to increased absorption of oral doses by the gastrointestinal tract in patients experiencing less nausea and vomiting from other causes.
Similarly, elevations of THC plasma concentrations achieved primarily by the inhalation route were also associated with reductions in the incidence of nausea and vomiting.
Some reduction in THC effectiveness may be attributable to the normal variation of nausea and vomiting responses in a patient observed for multiple courses and to the fact that only THC responders were studied in Phase II.
