UUHash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
UUHash is a hash algorithm employed by clients on the FastTrack network.
UUHash will hash the first 300 kilobytes then skip the next (300 * number of segments hashed) kilobytes before looping.
This weakness makes creating a hash collision trivial, allowing large sections to be completely altered without altering the checksum.

FastTrack (protocol) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The client then connects directly to a peer to download the file; this transfer is done using HTTP.
To allow downloading from multiple sources, FastTrack employs the UUHash hashing algorithm.
While UUHash allows very large files to be checksummed in a short time, even on slow computers, it also allows for massive corruption of a file to go unnoticed.

It is employed for its to hash very large files in a short period of time even on older However this is achieved by only hashing fraction of the file.

This weakness makes creating a hash collision allowing large sections to be completely altered altering the checksum.

 Allied's Review - Kazaa - FSP Forums
Zennstrom and Friis took the MD5 hashing algorithm and wrote their own version called UUhash.
UUhash would only analyze the first 300kB of the file and then generate a summary for the rest of the file.
On the plus side, UUhash can index all your shared files faster than any other hashing process.

Slyck News - eDonkey2000 Nearly Double the Size of FastTrack
The copyright industry has been able to take advantage of FastTrack because it uses UUHash to hash files.
UUHash's advantage is that is can hash files very quickly, but its major drawback is that it only hashes a fraction of the file.
Since UUHash hashes a file at predetermined integers, whoever wishes to corrupt a network only has to make sure the proper integers are hashed according to correct standards, while the rest of the file can be polluted.

The real important line is the one starting with UUHash...
Even if the hashes offer a rather safe way for sharing, they do NOT offer 100% protection against virus infected files.
Why not compute UUHashes from your own files and publish them in the forums?

Bitzi Bitzi Developer Discussion: STDOUT/UUHash/WinMX Hash support
Old FastTrack UUHash support is in bitcollider 0.4.0, which you can download from sourceforge.
Also, the first 20 bytes of the new KZHASH are the old FastTrack 'UUHash' -- except now displayed in hexadecimal rather than Base64.
So you certainly could extract the old values from the new Bitcollider output.

Slyck Forums - Where File-Sharers Meet
It will still take an incredible amount of time to crack the hashes, and (as mentioned before) software like Shareaza and Bearshare (don't know any others for sure, there probably are) verify smaller chunks of the file through tigerTree, so you'd need to find a weakness in both hashes combined.
If you can create two different files that have the same hash with nothing but a hex editor, you can call it a very weak hash algorithm...
edit: wikipedia article on UUHash, for those interested in knowing how lame UUhash really is.

p2pnet.net - the original daily p2p and digital media news site
Evidently, the hashing algorithm used by Kazza (and other p2p clients on the same network) is implemented in such a way that two very different files can easily have identical hashes, and in fact it's trivial to deliberately create two files with the same hash.
Evidently, RIAA uses this very weakness in the Kazza hashing system ("UUHash") all the time to create bogus music files that look identical to the real ones.
They already know the hashing algorithm is weak.

Shareaza Wiki - FAQ.Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
It uses a closed protocol, so Shareaza will never connect to it.
The Fast Track protocol uses an out of date hash system (uuhash) which can easily result in download corruption.
Corrupt files, Fake files and viruses are commonly found being shared on Fast-Track.

An even more compact way to share startfiles with your friends is to only give the UUHash signature information.
You can copy and paste thousands of them in just one text file.
If you don't know what the UUHash thing is...it looks like the example below.

The file is the name of the file you want to download.
The length is how big the file is. and the UUHash is a unique signature for the file, so you can be sure you're getting the right file.
Now, lets say we want to download something.

Putting this signature anywhere on the web or posting it to discussion boards are either a simple way to spread information about shared files.
It only takes a tool to do this, i call it sig2dat, which has 2 functions, it calculates a signature for a file which you can publish and can make a dat file out of a signature (UUHAsh).
This dat file is placed in "My Shared Folder" and starts downloading, as soon as it is found.
