  West Side Story (1961)
West Side Story (1961) is an energetic, widely-acclaimed, melodramatic musical - a modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, although the setting is the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s with conflict between rival street gangs rather than families.
West Side Story is still one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever created, and the finest musical film of the 60s.
Natalie Wood was un-nominated for West Side Story, but she was competing for a Best Actress Oscar (that she lost to Sophia Loren for Two Women) for her role in Spendor in the Grass (1961).

West Side Story - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West Side Story is a musical written by Arthur Laurents (book), Leonard Bernstein (music), and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), and was originally produced, choreographed, and directed by Jerome Robbins.
To this day, however, mentioning "West Side Story" in Puerto Rico is practically a taboo, and most Puerto Ricans perceive the play and subsequent film (still, even more than forty years after their publication) as the originators of an offensive stereotype that has been slow and difficult to remove from the collective American psyche.
The score for West Side Story was orchestrated by Bernstein himself, with assistance from Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal.

West Side Story -- Fact Sheet
The locale swiftly shifted to New York’s West Side, and in 1957 WSS exploded onto the American State.
Perhaps not all their pathways were to greater glory, but without WSS their careers would probably have taken considerably longer to blossom.
The operatic innovations introduced by the WSS creative quartet: broader song dimensions, simultaneities in complex counterpoint, etc. became grist to the Sondheim mill.

West Side Story (1961) at Reel Classics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
The most lauded movie musical ever made, WEST SIDE STORY (1961) didn't reinvent the genre or even rescue it from its impending decline, but this film's unprecedented integration of song, dance and narrative ushered the movie musical into the modern era.
The artistry with which WEST SIDE STORY combined elements of drama, opera and ballet -- not just to stylize William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but more importantly, to evoke the mood of the classic tragedy in a modern setting -- raised the standards by which musicals are judged.
Interestingly however, despite the fact that her singing voice was dubbed, Wood's success in WEST SIDE STORY led to a number of other starring roles in movie musicals, including GYPSY (1962), THE GREAT RACE (1965) and INSIDE DAISY CLOVER (1965).

As a now 50-year old, I first saw 'West Side Story' when I was about 7.
It may have been the first movie I ever saw outside home (actually at a drive-in--remember those?), and it's certainly the most memorable of movies I saw during that time of my life (although 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'The Music Man' are right up there too).
Great movie musicals are few and far between these days ('Chicago' sold well--I couldn't quite deal with Richard Gere as a song and dance man); I wish there was another 'West Side Story' in store to entertain me for the next 50 years of my life.
