Whether the term whisky to denote a plain type of spirit was used concurrently with usquebaugh, or whether the latter name covered both varieties, is not clear.
Scotch whiskies may be broadly divided into two main groups, namely (a) pot-still or malt whiskies, and (b) patent-still or grain whiskies; the former are made practically without exception from malted barley only, the latter from a mixture of malted barley and other unmalted cereals, chiefly rye, oats and maize (see Spirits).
The general run of Irish pot-still whiskies are made with 30 to 50% of malted barley, the balance being rye, oats, unmalted barley and wheat.

Traditional Islay malt whiskies are intensely smoky and pungent in character with a distinctive iodine or medicinal tang that is said to come from sea salt permeating the local peat that is used to dry the barley malt.

Whisky (or whiskey) is the name for a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from grains and are subsequently aged in oak casks.
The term Malt whisky is reserved for a whisky made from 100% malted barley; malt whisky is distilled using an onion-shaped pot still; malt whisky from one distillery is called single malt whisky to distinguish it from blended whiskies.
Grain whisky differs from malt in that it is usually made from corn/maize or other grains rather than malted barley, and distilled in continuous distillation process stills known as Coffey stills instead of the pot still used for quality whisky.

Gaelic is that branch of Celtic spoken in the Highlands of Scotland.
There is some evidence to show that the art of distilling could have been brought to the country by Christian missionary monks, but it has never been proved that Highland farmers did not themselves discover how to distil spirits from their surplus barley.
The earliest historical reference to whisky comes much later, Mr J Marshall Robb, in his book ‘Scotch Whisky’, says: ‘The oldest reference to whisky occurs in the Scottish Exchequer Rolls for 1494, where there is an entry of ‘eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aquavitae’.

The Glenavon Special Liqueur Whisky is believed to have been bottled about 150 years ago at the Glenavon Distillery, which was located in Banffshire.
Experts have said that if the whisky was indeed "bottled by the distillers", it could be the oldest to come to auction.
The Glenavon Distillery was licensed to John Smith, son of George Smith, founder of the nearby Glenlivet Distillery.
