Yakov Smirnoff - Uncyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Yavok Smirnoff was a corporal in the Strategic Comedy Corps of the Soviet Army who fled to America in the 1980s to avoid being sent to Afghanistan, where he had heard the crowds were "tough".
Yakov was found guilty on all counts and is currently serving 3 consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary for the many comedic crimes that he committed during his fifteen minutes of fame.
But what really set Smirnoff apart from other comedians of that period was that he had a questionable Russian accent, and that he was from Soviet Russia which, at the time, was an enemy of America and all that it stood for including, but not limited to, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".

Russian reversal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Russian reversal is a type of joke by Yakov Smirnoff which frequently appears in many online communities, in particular Slashdot.
All of Smirnoff's original “In Soviet Russia” jokes made use of wordplay that carried Orwellian undertones.
At the peak of Smirnoff's celebrity in the mid-1980s, he did not say “Soviet Russia” — he said simply “Russia,” as the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic had been around since 1917, was still extant, and showed no signs of imminent collapse.

 In Soviet Russia
As far as I can remember, the original Yakov Smirnoff versions just referred to "Russia"; I think that "Soviet Russia" is just more politically correct nowadays.
The In Russia jokes generally focus on using phrasing and order to cause a strong conflict of intent in a tiny literal rephrasing, in their degenerate form often by omitting words.
The success of Yakov Smirnov was to use such clever techniques - there are others; this is a common Russian form of humor - to discuss topics of extreme sensitivity regarding political climate, in his case as regarded his homeland.
